Is this going to happen by December 5? My son's $24,969 tuition is due that day, would be sweet not to have to write that check. _
Large public universities are going to be free for accepted students soon I bet. It's only a matter of time and its already kind of trending that way. That's going to hurt private schools like Cuse. I mean Cuse with its $1 Billion endowment won't be in dire straits or anything but my alma mater, St. Bonaventure would have to close its doors along with lots and lots of other smaller private schools
college shouldn't be free though IMO that's outrageous but something needs to be done about the costs but especially about the student loan debt. We are creating an entire generation of people that going to be unable to be consumers because they are curtailed by debt. A service based economy full of non-consumers is a disaster waiting to happen. but the extreme demands of these protesting kids are over the top, no question about that
So why are banks giving outrageous loans to kids that won't be able to afford them? Is the government subsidizing them? Of course the universities will continue to raise prices so long as that check comes in, why wouldn't they? Is this just another bubble? Surely the answer to every problem is not more government & taxes. That is unless maybe the question is "what is the root cause". (it's a joke, kind of)
Government caused the student debt problem by guaranteeing student loans. Pull the plug on that and you'll see tuition stop tripling the rate of inflation very shortly. Of course, a bunch of people won't be able to go to the private ivory tower of their choice now, but the public university down the road will more than adequately provide for them. I have no problem providing free or near-free public education. Americans are embarassingly ill-informed in general. And educated populace is a public good.
We already provide free public education to all citizens. How much is it going to cost to pay for "free" higher education and where is that money coming from? I think it might be a good idea to shore up the funds for our over 100 trillion in unfunded liabilities before we take on another massive one.
People who graduate from college in general earn more money, have less unwanted and uncared for children, commit fewer crimes, live longer and healthier lives, listen to less rap music and have fewer tattoos than those who don't. This is indisputably a net gain to society. Unless your ideal society is one where you have a significant portion of the population armed to the teeth to protect themselves from the portion that doesn't have any prospects that don't involve meth labs.
