I know some of you aren't that high on Mayock but I value his opinion very very much so I thought it was a good idea to extrapolate from today's chat on NFL.com some of his opinions on the 2010 draft. 1. It's not a great QB class this year, and there are many differences of opinion. I think Sam Bradford from Oklahoma will be the first QB off the board, and there are major differences of opinions with Jimmy Clausen. The guy that I like probably won't until the late first or early-to-mid second round, and that's Colt McCoy I agree it's not a great class but I think Clausen and Bradfod (in this order) are VERY good prospects and McCoy can do well if put in the right system (ala Orton in Denver for example). 2. As far as the OT's are concerned, it's another deep draft class. Russell Okung from OK State will be a top-15 pick, and Anthony Davis from Rutgers is an extremely talented underclassman. Let me give you a name to watch out for: Vladimir Ducasse (OG) from UMass has a chance to be a first-round pick. Deep but with not much top talent... but I agree there will be many OTs going in the first 2 rounds. Never heard of this Ducasse kid but on ESPN he is rated the number 1 guard prospect above Iupati! 3. Just this morning I was watching additional tape on RB C.J. Spiller from Clemson. He's explosive, has a tremendous burst and scored 52 TDs in his career at Clemson. Of those, 21 went for 50 or more yards. He also has tremendous hands. Spiller will be a top 15 pick. ... The WR position will be dominated by underclassmen, the most talented being OK State's Dez Bryant. However, to be a top 15 pick he needs to push the cheese burgers away and get his butt in shape. Love CJ as a complimentary back... sort of in a Leon role. Everyone seems to have a different fav WR... 4. There is no question in my mind that the best two players I have seen on tape this year are Suh, the DT from Nebraska, and McCoy, the DT from Oklahoma. After that it will get interesting. Some teams like Bradford, the QB from Oklahoma, and there are three or four OTs who will make a difference. It'll be interesting to see if St. Louis takes a shot at a QB or goes for the sure thing in one of the DTs 5. Joe Haden is the top corner in this year's draft. The kid from FSU, Patrick Robinson, is a talented kid who has played inconsistently throughout his career. It will be fun to watch him compete at the Senior Bowl in two weeks. Agree about Haden, he'll be a top 15 pick 6. I know some teams that were hoping Lamaar Houston would be a sleeper pick for them. I watched four game tapes prior to the championship game and loved his motor, toughness and production. He does not have prototypical size for a DT, which may keep him in the second round. Either way, I love the kid and think he'll be a highly productive NFL player. Nooo idea who this guy is... can he play DE in a 3-4? 7. There are two main problems associated with Tebow: the first is a significant mechanical flaw with his throwing motion that will take considerable time to fix. The second deals with the teams' offensive philosophy and whether or not they are willing to make serious changes to accomodate Tebow. Most NFL teams do not view him as a first-round QB, and I am in agreement with that viewpoint. Who cares about Tebow!
Nice, it's Mayock's time of the year. Agree with him on the QBs, except I don't think McCoy should go even that high. He's off of my radar though, and if a team picks him that early that just means we get a better player when we pick. Ducasse's been getting alot of hype lately. He was an All American though. No clue about him beyond that. It would be sick if Dez Bryant fell to us due to all these minor knocks. He's going to be a high end WR... I hope some other team blows a pick on Houston in the 2nd too. Probably a solid player, but doesn't fit our system and even then I wouldn't use a 2nd.
I feel like Aurrelious Benn has really slipped from the public consciousness. I see him as potentially the most dangerous and flexible wide receiver in this draft--I think Percy Harvin when I see Benn.
Really? Why's that? I don't seem any similarities at all. Benn is a big, physical receiver, while Harvin is more of a finesse player. I think after the combine, Arrelious Benn will rise up boards - he's a victim of poor quarterback play.
I was thinking more Anquan Boldin...except Benn's a bit more fluid. I'd say Andre Johnson, but that's just stacking on praise and Johnson was an elite WR prospect. I do buy Benn as a player...too much talent not to and he's a high character guy...
Just in terms of versatility. Despite his size, Benn's got great quickness, and just like Harvin at UF, the coaches at Illinois did everything to get the ball in his hands--running sweeps, using him in the Wildcat, kick returns. Plus I think he can have an immediate impact at the next level. It's not a totally physical comparison, but in terms of how they're used and potential first year performance. Although that Boldin comparison is great, too. Having watched Benn play the last few years, and torch Penn State, you can see just how good he'd have been if he was on a team that didn't suck.
Your comment could be used with any player in any position...just doesn't make sense. A real General comment!!! It's a good two-step for your arguement. I just don't see any similarities between Benn and Harvin...zero....except being Wrs. Benn is a physical WR, with size and good hands and Harvin is small but a dynamic weapon when used properly. Something I mentioned earlier in the season, Benn's troubles this year can also be contributed to the loss of Mike Locksley, Illinois' Off Coor. in the 2008 season. J Williams can take some of the blame, but not all, the new scheme just sucked this season.
A guy that slips in the first round a bit and makes an immediate impact their first year? I don't agree with it but I think there have been more outrageous comparison's and statements made on this forum.
Ed's initial post clearly, at least the way I interpreted the comment, Benn and Harvin were very similar players. IMO, couldn't be further from the truth!!!
OK...got it. I just never go that route, I try to compare players that are similar Benn and Boldin, as someone stated, seem to be similar type players. More of an Apples to Apples comparison.
Vlad Ducasse is a monster and if teams feel he can move to tackle he could be this years Brandon Albert
if him or Davis from Rutgers somehow mysteriously was there I think id be salivating. the senior bowl matchups will either take a major hit or boost to their stock. alot of people will love to see some of the elite DT's get some board drills with these OL
Ducasse should face off against my boy Oghobaase at the East-West Shrine game. That should be fun to watch.
We need Dline desperatly. I don't get the obsession on a WR. Didn't we just use draft picks on one? His name is Braylon Edwards. There is no 3rd reciever in this draft worth a first rounder. We need DT,OT, CB and Safety more than a WR. If Leon isn't healthy we are thin at RB.
