I was thinking about this weeks ago when I heard contract grumblings out of the Jones camp. Atlanta just took another potential stud WR in Ridley. They also still have to get the Ryan contract worked out and they're on the record saying they are prioritizing 2 OL to get their contracts worked out in front of Jones. Why not try?
We have the cap space to pay him what he wants with tons and tons left over, so in that regard it makes sense. But we are already down a bunch of 2nd rounders, what would we give up that Atlanta would even consider accepting? I'm not giving up a 1st for a 29 year old receiver that is forever injured.
Yes, the injury history is a concern but the potential impact he could have on Darnold's growth over weighs the negatives in my opinion. Investing in Julio is investing in Darnold is investing in the FUTURE!
Trade what? A first and then we have to pay him? Now we are going into next offseason with a big chunk of cap gone, no first and no second still needing a olb and o line help. Nah, dominant wr is not a prerequisite for winning a super bowl. I’ll pass
Crazy Talk. Jets are in middle of rebuild, and have a group of competent receivers. Atlanta is not going to trade Julio for nothing, and we don't have much to trade now. (Only 1 first round pick and no second round pick next year) No other players that Atlanta would want that we could afford to trade.
Remember what happened to Mark Sanchez? He inherited a stacked roster overseen by a win-now GM, and he fell apart as the roster did. We don't need to win now, we need to build suatainably and trading picks for an expensive 29 year old receiver isn't building sustainably.
We're not a good WR away from being a contender. Still have holes on the OL and no real pass rusher that need to be addressed with draft and FA capital. No thanks on Julio.
I’d rather see that Darnold is the guy and clearly in need of #1 weapon before pulling the trigger on a guy like this.
Not a fan of paying a WR or RB big bucks. Did the Pats ever do it? No, we can win with the group we have. Save the $ for a LT and pass rusher next year
I think that adding Jones is something you do after the team has started showing signs of things clicking on offense. This year is going to be one of those development years that we hope to see Darnold make some progress. Adding Jones at this point is not necessary, plus there is tons of competition at the position. Next off season the Jets should consider adding pieces of that caliber but not right now.
Well they did get Randy Moss and it turned out pretty well. The difference is they had a franchise QB already on the team. We don’t know what we have yet.
Eh, not totally true. Moss signed the 4th highest WR contract in the league with the Pats. Gronk is the highest paid TE in NFL history (he's a pass catcher). But overall, I agree.
Seems crazy to trade for a guy who is probably past his prime and will almost certainly be past his prime by the time Darnold is an established starter. Fixing & rebuilding the o-line should be the #1 priority of the Jets over the next 2-3 seasons. Giving up valuable resources for WR's who won't matter when Darnold is ready would be counterproductive and a big mistake IMO.
