Interesting interview. There were the typical dumb questions from Florio that put Joe on the spot, and that there's no way he could give an honest answer to, but there were also some good questions. I was glad to hear JD pretty much admit that he made a mistake in not bringing in a veteran QB to start and allowing Zach to sit. (He said that if he had it to do over, he would have brought in a veteran QB and not started Zach day 1.) One can tell by his words and the way he said them that he still totally believes in Zach, and that Zach is working hard, having fun, and has a smile on his face, which is a great sign. He also made a statement that Zach was learning how to better relate to his teammates, which is important in his mending bridges, and becoming a better leader. He said that Breece Hall is working hard to be ready day 1, but they're having to monitor him because they don't want him to overdo it. They're not going to rush him or pressure him to be ready. Overall, JD handled all the questions (especially the dumb ones) with poise and aplomb. I thought it interesting when speaking about trying to make the Jets a destination where any NFL would want to play, that he spoke about making them a better person first, over being a better or more successful football player. That of course was included, but it shows that they care about their players and about character and it isn't just lip service as it is with some teams.
It doesn't sound like Douglas is ready to give up on ZW, and also that Zach is working hard with a positive attitude and trying to soak up as much as he can from Rodgers. What else does anyone want?
Until it's demonstrated how the Jets actually make a player a better person it's just lip service, even if you like the message.
I thought it was a good interview, where JD seemed to answer questions with candor, very few GM-speak answers. After months of trade talk, free-agency & the draft, JD seemed relaxed & willing to fill in some blanks... specifically on the AR negotiations, & his feelings about Zach. I liked hearing about Zach smiling again. Seems like with Hackett et al & the addition of AR, Zach is in the perfect environment for him to develop, if he's got it in him... unlike the environment he was in with the previous OC. Lots more substance than we normally get from these interviews. As an aside, I just wish people would understand what interviews actually are... it's not the interviewer that's important, it's what the subject of the interview (JD) says. I could care less of how people rate the questions, or the interviewer. So much nonsense in these threads. I never understand why some people even watch/listen to interviews, since anything any interviewee says is viewed with skepticism, or dismissed as lip-service. .
