I know a lot of you guys don't like these two but I was interested to see what they would say about the game and I think they pretty much summed up what a lot of us have been saying. Mike who has always been a big Chad backer said that the game yesterday was the first game it really stood out that Chads arm strength hurt them. He also said the coaching staff has done a bad job this year. Too many penalties, not tricking anyone with their play calling, and no pass rush and therefore not enough big plays on defense. Chris agreed and said big plays win games in the NFL and the Jets have no big plays. Whether its the home run on offense or the big turnover on defense. Also mentioned the 4th and one on the first drive. He thought they should have went for it. I agree that was a mistake. They didn't mention a qb change but at least they weren't mesmorized by the 32-39. The Giants are going to destroy us next week unless we fix things fast.
The big play issue is huge. That's why Leon needs to keep getting touches, that's why I'd like to see Kellen play, and that's why our pass rush is wrecking us. Chad would be a much better quarterback for us if our defense forced turnovers. If Chad can play a ball control offense based on a defense getting ahead and a power running game, Chad can playfake and dink and dunk with the best of them. But we don't have that, and few teams do.
The 4th and one was huge You know the Belichick and Parcells would have went for that. The friggin' Bills are on the ropes. They have a ton of injuries and average talent. You put your foot on their throat and keep it there. You get them down a score or two and it puts more pressure on the rookie QB. Mangini is punting like he thinks we're the '85 Bears or something. Bottom line, he was playing not to lose, so he lost.
To me they are playing concervative AGAIN, like they did for years. I just don't get it. Last year Mangini was taking chances, now it's like he is stuck in a Joe Walton trance..
It's a Chad Pennington trance. He can't seem to sort out all the 3 yard dinks from completions that might actually help the Jets win a game against a solid defense. I understand where he's stuck though. Many of us watched the dink and dunk for years and were mesmerized by it and its ability to beat bad teams. It's only when the Jets are bad and it no longer beats even bad teams that it begins to lose its allure. Chad has always been able to beat teams definably worse than the Jets like a drum, and he has always struggled in games against teams that were better than the Jets. These days there are very few of the former and a lot of the latter. And by struggle I mean go 32-39 and just two offensive TD's on the day. When you create a really long chain of plays that must go right for you to score you greatly increase the chances of the other team breaking that chain somewhere and forcing a punt or FG attempt.
I personally would have challenged the spot of the ball. Brad smith had that first down and then they take the penalty to make room for a punt , that my friends is a defeated football team before the game even ended.
Unless Chad gets "Bledsoe'd", Mangenius stays with him to the bitter end. Unfortunately, that may happen perhaps 2 weeks from today..
I disagree. I think Clemens will be the starter this season, but it'll be too late. Think Mark Brunell/Jason Campbell last year with Washington.,
If the Jets lose to the Giants Clemens will start against Philly the next week. 1-4 is the gutcheck moment for a coach on QB changes. Either the change gets made or the season goes down the tubes. Making the change doesn't guarantee anything better but a 1-4 team is like a whipped dog already and they need new leadership to come back from that.
BTW, if the Jets keep losing the front office is going to be getting a lot of deadfish stares from the local and national media. Names like Andre Wadsworth, Pete Kendall and Adrian Clarke will start bubbling off people's lips on TV and the disaster that this last offseason was will become more apparent.
I wasn't thinking that they should challenge the spot, but they did not even ask for a measurement. I have seen some games whre a team is short by like 2 yards, and they ask the ref to measure.
Your analysis of what Chad is lacking in support is 100% on. Our defensive big plays are in petrified forest situation. Without them, we become very mediocre, fast.
if francessa thinks that this was really the 1st game that CP arm strength hurt the team than where has he been for the last few years. that is an atrocious observation and i wonder if anyone schooled him on it. jil
There have always been, and were in this week's game, throws that make you gasp. The ball is in the air, you look at your friend, his brow is furrowed, you look back at the tv -- the ball is still in the air -- someone yells "pick!!!"; the ball is still in the air, and then, mercifully, the pass is just batted away. That's what happens when pennington throws over 15 yards in the air. Hell, he almost put Cotchery in the hospital with a 5 yard pass in the first half. Yikes.
This past game, unlike most before, it was REALLY obvious. I mean, I know you'll say it's been obvious before, but it's REALLY obvious when you take the #32 defense who can't stop the run and they shut it down because all 11 guys are in the box.
i think they are just playing the style that suits their personnel. Let's face it, its not like we have carson palmer at QB.
Our defense was terrible, but we did hold Buffalo to 17 points. I'm much more concerned about only scoring 14 against a squad of backups. It's time for Chad to go, although the entire offense was out of sync yesterday. That 4th down disturbed me because the offense lined up but didn't even set and try to draw them offsides (though usually unsuccessful) they just stood there clueless.
