    OPENING DAY ROSTERS

    Mets
    Yankees

So, basically, the Yankees are better at every position, except 1B.

Wang - Glavine: not even close.
Mussina - El Duque: Reference "Wang - Glavine"
Pettitte - Maine: close one hear, but Pettitte edges him out
Pavano - Perez: we'll call it a draw. I'm being generous
Igawa - Pelfrey: doing you a favor here, Pelfrey

Posada - Lo Duca: draw. Personally, I'd take Posada
Mientkiewicz - Delgado: Fine, take Delgado
Cano - Valentine: reference "Mussina - El Duque"
Jeter - Reyes: Probably the closest one that isnt a draw. JETER
Rodriguez - Wright: I despise arod, even though he's the better player, WRIGHT
Matsui - Alou: The ageless wonder (Alou) vs Matsui. I'll take Matsui in a close one. I for one, would rather see Melky in left, but I'm not the manager
Damon - Beltran: Beltran. Too bad he didnt swing at the hanging curve to end the playoffs though
Abreu - Green/Milledge: Doesn't matter who the Mets put out there, Abrue absolutely

While Posada provides the power, Lo Duca brings the fire and amazing eye to the game everyday. How could you not take Lo Duca over Posada.

Jeter may have had the better career so far, but Reyes sets the table for the Mets. Reyes had 10 more extra base hits than Jeter last year, not to mention, his power, and speed was better. While Jeter's defense was slightly, not that much better, I'd still call that a draw.

Alou is the perfect fit for the Mets though, as they needed a guy who can hit off of lefties, which we sucked at last year.

Green is a joke, getting 10 million dollars to be the 7th man, and to hit .270-.280, with less than 20 HRs? I can't see him being on the team come September. If Milledge can't be out Shawn Green come opening day, he should be sent back to the minors. I'd much rather have Endy out there than Green at this point for his defense.

The Mets bullpen wins a no contest vs the Yankees bullpen. Easily.

Now I'm a Yankee fan, but there's no way the Yankees are better at every position.

Pettitte does not overmatch Maine, not even close.
Wang >>> Glavine, simply thanks to age.
Pavano doesn't even belong in the majors.

Seriously, the Yankees starting rotation is weak, at best. Clemens MIGHT help that, but I'm not seeing a very low ERA from our starters this year.

Posada I agree. Better than Lo Duca.

    Delgado is the better 1B.

Cano is a far better 2B.

Jeter/Reyes is just an argument. Yankee fans are going to say Jeter, Met fans are going to say Reyes. Personally, I think Jeter brings more intangibles, but Reyes is the more talented physically.

Right now, I take Wright over ARod if I'm building a team and have to choose between them.

Matsui over Alou in a battle of old men.

Beltran over Damon. Minus a called third strike, the guy is MVP material.

As for Abreu, yeah, he trumps anything the Mets have to offer.

Overall though, the Mets look better on paper right now, at least in my view.

No more listing of the Mets starting rotation please, it makes it very difficult to keep my head buried in the sand.

Forgetting Britton for the Yanks bullpen, the guy from Baltimore who pitched very well last year and was acquired for Jaret Wright. Clemens gives the Yankees an experienced, playoff proven 1-4, with wildcars like Igawa and the 3 young guys in AAA, Hughes, Sanchez and Ohlendorf who could project as a 1-2-3 in the majors by 2009.

When did Clemens sign with the Yankees? Even if he does the guy he is like 44 already, should be retired. It's like Favre every single year.

Two lefties are not making the Yankees bullpen, especially over Britton and Vizciano.

And it's Brian Bruney, not Kyle.

Mets would have 4 lefties to 3 rightys in the pen. Gotta love have 4 lefties. Mota will be back though, how effective, who knows.

Who wants Mota back? The guy is a cheater that blew up multiple times in the playoffs.

To revise your statement.. he's more like a Favre who can actually play. A 7-6 record with a 2.3 ERA last year is pretty amazing for someone at his age. I know that a move to the AL would hurt his ERA but he would definitly be a solid starter. I, for one, hope the yankees get him

Now? Yes. He's 25 or 26 and capable of putting up the same numbers.

    dwalsh,
you put some great effort into the comparison but as a Yankee fan, it doesnt matter to me who might be better between the Yankees and the Mets and what it looks like on paper.
While it may be fun for some, I would rather put my worries into how the Yankees stack up against the Red Sox, Orioles, Blue Jays, White Sox, Angels and the rest of the American League since those will be the teams that we will need to beat to make the playoffs.
If we are lucky enough to have another subway series, that is when I will start to scout the Mets and I hope that does happen.

ok Buttleman, you may be right about that, but the majority of the board is either a Yankees fan, or a Mets fan.

With that said, I do not think that the Mets will win more then 85 games this year. Yankees probably mid 90s

See that's a tough call. There's one reason, and one reason only, that I wanted Pettitte back. The postseason. He's been there before. He's been capable in October.

Maine is young and pretty damn good. I'll always take quality youth if I can get it.

I disagree. While it pains me to say it, I think the Mets win more regular season games than the Yankees this year. That's okay though, we'll still be in the postseason, so I don't care.

I'm glad Pettitte's back but there is a flipside to his postseasons... He's either great or absolutely awful... there's no middle ground with him...

Absolutely. But given the talent pool to choose from this offseason, with the only other option to the mediocre FA talent being our kids in the farm system being rushed up too soon, Pettitte was the right choice.

With what starting pitching will the Mets win so many games?

Tom Glavine is the "ace" of the Mets. He would not be a #4 in the AL
