Anytime you can acquire a guy whose OBP is below .310 you gotta do it. He has some upside though, so not a horrible move.
Another one of Minaya's infamous garbage nonsense gambles I am not a big fan of Church but Francoeur blows and blows hard
Just so you know that sports radio is dumb, Joe Beningo disliked Adam Dunn why because he is like Dave Kingman (even though on a regular basis Dunn's OBP is about .100 more than Kingman's) and turns around and likes this trade due to "potential" even though Francoeur that at his highest potential is probably Dave Kingman
Gee, I don't know what you guys are talking about - this is the move that wins the Mets the World Series!
What I don't understand is that Frenchy's days were likely done Atlanta and you have no OF's to begin with, so why would you trade away the one serviceable OF you have that isn't hurt for a part time player? I love how all of a sudden we're building for the future when every year we sign guys like Castillo, Shef and Cora, how long was Marlon Anderson on this team and how about the great move to bring in Ramon Hernandez? So now we're looking to next year.... maybe if you'd actually bring in some quality depth this team wouldn't be looking to next year and still have a somewhat respectable record depsite the injuries.
When i worked the Braves spring traing games, the one thing I hated the most was the satadium announcer saying his name. Jeff Fran cooooooooooooooooooooooooooorr!!
meh.....i wanted Dunn. However, this might be good, because let's face it, Church didn't want to be on the team anymore, so I'd rather have a guy who's got more HR's and RBI's and might not have a problem with the team, then Church.
Honestly, I don't think this is a big deal. It's a crappy trade, but it's not like this really changes everything. The real problem is if it's a sign of things to come.
i like the trade, At least Francouer can stay on the field. He had two good full seasons, compared to the half of a good season Church had. Its not like this is a big trade, we pretty much traded old garbage for younger garbage.
I can see the part about staying on the field and being younger, but the two good seasons versus half a good season just isn't true. Church has been an above-average hitter every year of his career until this one (other than when he came up at the end of 2004) - his OPS+ values were 118, 131, 114, 106. Francoeur started off great in a half season in 2005 (OPS+ of 126), but he's been below average (or barely average) since then (OPS+ 87, 103, 72, 68). Other than that half season in 2005, Francoeur has been mediocre to lousy, including in the years when he got over 100 RBI. Castillo's OPS+ for the Mets the past two years (83) isn't much lower than Francour's for his career (89). And, of course, the last two years Francoeur has been far worse than Castillo, or probably any other Met. As noted above, this is just another throw the garbage up on the wall trade for Omar, hoping something will stick.
That's a negative, actually. The more he's on the field, the more detrimental he is to the team. Seriously, like, statistically and shit. He VORPed -17.8 last season. People say he has upside because he's a good athlete, but we aren't building a track and field squad, it's baseball. It's about certain skills. Hitting is one of them. And he sucks at it.
I don't mind trading Church, of course, but you need to get a prospect as well as Mr. Strikeout. I guess Minaya likes him, rather than Dunn, because he's cheaper and younger. Dunn is a better player, of course.
The problem is that Church is much better right now. It's not really debatable. It's getting younger, but Omar needs more than a guy who's 25.5 and has OBPs of .294 and .282 in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
