I figure I'll try my hand at a game thread. It's time to light the crap of the NL on fire here over the next few series' and leave them on Atlanta and Philly's doorstep. Game 1: Orlando Hernandez (7-4, 3.05) @ Ian Snell (7-10, 3.87) Game 2: John Maine (12-7, 3.53) @ Matt Morris (7-7, 4.53) Game 3: Brain Lawrence (1-0, 4.09) @ Tony Armas (2-3, 6.13)
God, can this get any worse? Just when it looks like Duque will get out of it he gives up an RBI hit. This team is just plain awful.
30 pitches already in the first inning for el duque. terrific. now the bullpen is going to get burned up in the first game of the series
Funny how Gary and Keith are trying to explain how the D'Backs can be 15 games over .500 while being outscored. It's very simple guys - they've been lucky. Two on none out in the bottom of the 3rd. Sigh.
something you may not know about bautista: he was one of the many prospects dealt away on black friday, the day the mets set fire to their vaunted farm system. he was in the benson deal. benson deal didn't hurt us that much, but it was also a horrible trade. they traded for a free agent to be. why trade for him when you can just sign him in the offseason? either way, you're going to have to overpay. the need to have him for two months wasn't nearly great enough to justify the caliber of prospects we dealt. but since matt peterson is still in the pitt minor leagues, that trade is ignored.
I think the biggest reason that that trade is ignored is that the Mets got John Maine and Jorge Julio (who they traded for Duque) for him.
yeah, but he wasn't a main component. he was an additional guy the pirates insisted on, so we traded the royals for bautista, then packaged him with some other prospects. the deal ended up being BELTRAN HOMERS!
ok, where I was before Beltran interrupted me: Kris Benson and Jeff Keppinger for Matt Peterson, Ty Wigginton and Jose Bautista. peterson was highly regarded at the time. imagine if he had panned out and we'd traded two top young starters on the same day for nothing?
I remember when Wiggy was brought up to the majors. I was in camp and I heard on the radio about the sensation the mets brought up; how he was batting like .400. btw, braves started smoltz against the giants, who had no one to go. they ended up pitching reliever correia. 3-0 giants in the 3rd. phillies/nationals scoreless in 6th
