doesn't matter where he heard it. it happened. http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10270475 I'm not understanding why they'd send down joe smith. isn't sandy alomar jr on the roster? mota? schoenweis? why would smith of all people get sent down? Obviously he's not injured, or else he'd be put on the DL.
Maybe they think the hitters have adjusted to him and he needs to work on some stuff, maybe they want to rest him. Adkins may only be up for a day anyway, since Pelfrey has to come up to pitch on Saturday.
I'm not saying that I expected a move like this, but it really does have to be acknowledged that Smith has been pretty bad for almost two months. In June and July his WHIP is 2.47 and his ERA is 5.40. During that time he's had 20 appearances, and in 16 of them he gave up at least one baserunner; in 11 he gave up at least two baserunners.
Smith has sucked after teams figured started figuring him out. Mets need to trade for bullpen help bad.
I understand demoting Smith, but Adkins will be just as bad as Smith's been the last 2 months if not worse.
I think the main point was that Smith needed to go to AAA more than thinking this will necessarily be an upgrade. Also since they need a starter for Saturday's doubleheader (Pelfrey), Adkins' stay will be a very short one.
Let Smith develop some deception now that the arm angle thing has been figured out. I'm pleasantly surprised he lasted this long.
