Mike Mayock discusses 29th pick » By Rich Cimini NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock, speaking today on a conference call with reporters, believes the Jets will pick a rush linebacker or a defensive lineman with the 29th overall pick. The first possibility he mentioned was Penn State DE/DT Jared Odrick, whom he said should go anywhere between 22 and 29. Odrick (6-5, 304), the Big Ten defensive player of the year, is attractive to the Jets because of his versatility. He can be a '5-technique,' a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme, and slide inside on passing downs when they go to a four-man line. Mayock, one of the sharpest draft guys in the business, also mentioned Texas OLB Sergio Kindle (6-3, 250) as a candidate for the Jets. Kindle is a hybrid player, having played a lot of OLB and DE in college. He recorded only six sacks last season, but he became the first player in history to be nominated as a finalist for the Butkus Award (best LB) and Hendricks Award (best DL) in the same year. Kindle has some off-the-field questons, but, hey, the Jets aren't afraid to take chances, as we know. I mentioned TCU pass rusher Jerry Hughes to Mayock, and he raved about him. Mayock believes Hughes is a late-1 value, adding, "I like him a lot ... He's explosive, he's tough and he's got a motor that doesn't stop. He's one of the players they'd have to consider." The big question with Hughes, Mayock pointed out, is his size. He's a shade under 6-2, 255 pounds, lacking bulk and strength to anchor against the run. But this dude can get after the quarterback (11 1/2 sacks last season) and he'd be able to contribute immediately as a nickel rusher. The Jets' pick could hinge on the outcome of the Jason Taylor saga. If they don't land him, they will need to address the pass-rushing situation early in the draft. I would be happy with Odrick
My personal preferance in order of those three would be Kindle, Hughes, Odrick, all things considered and looking at the whole draft picture. If you just look at the first round and forget the depth of the draft in certain positions then I'd move Odrick ahead of Hughes and maybe ahead of Kindle, but there's ALOT of DE/DT depth in this draft and we can get a very good, not elite, but very good DE/DT with our second round pick...Won't be able to do that with OLB which, unless we sign Taylor, we really really need.
Couldn't disagree more, Outside of Kindall, Hughes is what best fits our need at OLB, Smart, high motor, loves to go after the QB, his weakness is against the rush, but we play in an increasingly pass happy league.
I laugh every time I see that. Odrick and Kindle would be great. I'll throw Linval Joseph, Everson Griffen, and Ricky Sapp in there for my defensive wish list at 29.
How many heads are exploding in this draft forum, ATM? Unstoppable, genius scout meets immovable, for-sure bust? BOOM! Heads exploding. For the record, I agree with Mayock on almost everything, including his Hughes analysis. He knows his s***.
I like this guy, maybe a little early for him but he looks kick ass
I think it is too early for him, but I doubt anyone would hate the pick if we made it. He's slightly undersized, some would say, but his motor vastly makes up for it, IMO. He also will most likely be gone by 63.
I can't figure out why this guy hasn't been brought in for an interview. I feel like Alualu is just a well kept secret among the scouting community thus far. Guys who have a solid "2nd rounder" tag in 32 war rooms have a knack of sneaking into the first.
I don't think Alualu is a secret any longer. I agree, I wish the Jets brought Alualu in for a visit, but don't put too much stock into no Floram Park visit. It's possible they spoke at the combine and I'm certain the Jets had representation at Cal's pro-day. Alualu will not last to the Jet's 2nd round pick
I don't know if Hughes will be a bust, but i think he definitely has the agility and quickness to play in space standing up as an OLB in the 34, should he be drafted by a team with 34 defense. I like Eversen Griffen too, but I saw in another thread Mick bought up a question about his intelligence. I'd like to get some closure on this issue..... It's alwasy good to draft a guy who not only has it physically, but mentally understands what the NFL game is about. Guys in the mould of Revis, Harris, and Vilma. Smart football players.
Griffen sounds bad in interviews. James Harrison is the same way, so maybe i'm over analyzing an intangible a little too much.
If I spoke to Shaun Ellis I'd probably walk away thinking, ''wow, what a retard.'' I'm not too concerned about the intelligence aspect. What matters is football smarts. From what I've seen of Griffen.. he's got the football smarts. Griffen is my pick for 29 I think he'll be an absolute stud in this league/our defense.
He knows the game, that's all that matters. If you look at his tape, you'll see a guy who knows his assignments, knows how to play in pursuit and knows where his help is. I wouldn't be too worried about his SAT verbal score.
Ellis speaks just fine. There are interviews with him on the team website. Griffen doesn't seem to grasp speaking in complete sentences. I love the tape I see from him. I want him on this team, but its what's between the ears that has to make the transition to the NFL as well, not just the football skill.
He got caught with weed (I smoke weed occasionally but I'm not in the NFL) and he looks like a retarded deer in headlights. I assumed he spoke the way he looked. Never heard him speak though so I'll take your word for it. Lets face it though, Griffen is a DL/DE.. if he was a quarterback I'd be worried but it's not as if all trench players are of the intelligent types.
Just look at the difference between him and Gholston in college. If Gholston couldn't overpower or run around the OLine, he was done because he had no idea of what to do. Griffen doesn't let that happen to himself because he knows how to get back into the play. That's really all the convincing that I need.
