    Jets' coordinator goes on offensive

    BY RICH CIMINI
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Chad Pennington will have to impress new coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

The challenge outweighs his resume. At 32, Brian Schottenheimer is the second-youngest offensive coordinator in the NFL, a rookie play caller, and he has one tough job: Trying to fix the Jets' offense, and having to do it without a clear-cut starter at quarterback.
Some might say he's too green, but Schottenheimer has experienced more than your average 32-year-old assistant coach. The son of Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, Brian can recall being "a kid with a runny nose, sitting in quarterback meetings with Joe Montana."

He grew up in the game. He also did a lot of growing up two years ago, when he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

"I haven't been that frightened in all my life," said Schottenheimer, hired by Eric Mangini in February.

These days, Schottenheimer is focused on matters such as the quarterback competition (he spoke highly of Chad Pennington, but refused to give him an edge over Patrick Ramsey) and the crowded backfield (he hinted that Curtis Martin's workhorse days could be over), but his bout with cancer never is far from his mind. "Every day when I wake up, if I don't see the scar in the mirror, I'm reminded when I take my two pills," said Schottenheimer, who spent four seasons as the Chargers' quarterbacks coach before joining the Jets.

Schottenheimer's cancer was discovered shortly before training camp in 2004. He pulled his dad out of a staff meeting to break the news, and they both cried. A week later, both thyroid glands and 17 lymph nodes were removed.

Soon after the diagnosis, a member of Schottenheimer's family recalled that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, who unceremoniously fired Marty after one season in 2001, had a similar procedure. Putting aside any bitter feelings, Marty called his old boss and asked for the name of his doctor. Snyder didn't hesitate to help, according to Brian.

"Life and death is more important than a game," said Schottenheimer, now cancer-free.

His greatest fear was that his vocal cords would be damaged during the surgery. As his quarterbacks soon found out, they weren't. He's an intense coach, not afraid to yell. His patience will be tested this season, as he inherits an offense that ranked 29th in scoring. Schottenheimer commented on various topics, including:

Pennington: "I think Chad is throwing the ball very well. I think he's doing a nice job. I'm encouraged by what I see."

On his philosophy: "It doesn't have a name. It doesn't fall into the West Coast category. It doesn't fall into the Joe Gibbs category. It's a solid system that's going to be determined as we go into training camp."

On the influence of Steve Spurrier, under whom he played at Florida: "He's the greatest game-day playcaller I've ever been around."

Curtis will still get the majority of the carries, and I don't mind Blaylock and Houston being mixed in because they're pretty much opposites and compliment each other well.

I don't know if I want to see Blaylock. If it's not going to be Martin I want to see Washington or Houston in there and see what they can do.

Blaylock is nothing more then an insurance policy at this point.I was never very impressed with him when he was starting for KC, and he didn't impress me in his limited action last year. Of course, the OL was a mess, so that certainly played some part.

I'd like to see the younger guys get their reps, but I still want Curtis to get his playing time.

Houston looked good last year behind a garbage o-line. If anyone is to take carries away from Martin I'd like it to be Houston.

O come on! Its obvious that Curtis Martin is not going to be taking 95% of carries but who cares? I still think that he will be 1000+ easy and helping out the new backs...

If Curtis can't muster at least 250 carries for 1,000 yards this year we're going to have real problems on offense.

Well, he's not going to carry 330 times, but if he's healthy and at all effective he should still get the majority of the carries. There's no one better on this roster.

I am a big fan of using Washington and Houston as much as we can, they will be players down the road and while rebuilding might as well not keep someone like Blaylock that does not have much to offer

I agree, any succes we have this season will mostly ride on what production we can get out of our O-Line and Martin

I feel just the opposite. If this team is going to count on Martin carrying them than we are doomed to not only being bad but not building to the future. It's time for one of the young players to step up or we better go out and get someone who will. Martin is on the downside and the Jets are rebuilding. It will be nice to get some flashes from Martin but thinking we are going to get anything more than that is just wishfull thinking.

I know it's a new regime, but I'll believe it when I see it. Unless someone really steps up Curtis is going to be getting most of the carries as long as he's here, which hopefully won't be past the end of next season.

Askew should get some carries as well.

he doesnt suck, trust me on that. he might be a "3rd down back" but for his size he runs really well in between the tackles, his burst through the line is amazing.

now im not calling him the solution to RB but he will be a solid contributor on this team for years to come though.

I'm in complete agreement that the Jets need a young guy to become the mainstay. The problem is that young guy is not on the roster yet.

Blaylock is a joke. Askew has never carried any kind of load anywhere and has not exhibited the ability to make that kind of jump in his early seasons with the Jets. Washington is a bowling ball and it's hard to project him as even a two down starter. Houston is essentially a body.

Next season the Jets need to make a major investment at tailback, either a top FA or day one stud in the draft. For this season it really comes down to whether or not Martin can carry any kind of load successfully.

If I had to pick the one guy who would be most likely to step it up and give the Jets some productive carries it would be Askew, but he's definitely a longshot in my opinion.
