How would the board feel about signing Marcus McNeil? We have got to do something about the impending disaster at RT.
Tannenbaum says they aren't going to do anything right now. He has Hunter and three young players that he will go with.
Guys, Hunter is MOST LIKELY starting at RT. He's bad, but disaster is a stretch. For example, Eric Winston was just as bad. No team in the NFL is without weakness. The Patriots went to the Superbowl with virtually no defense. Our 'terrible' offense was still better than that defense, and added Tebow, Hill, Schilens, proper offensive coaching, and likely improved chemistry. Get off the ledges, Chicken Littles. McNeil isn't a 'come in and compete' guy, he would require a decent contract.
Dude is damaged goods with that neck injury and has been known to be injury prone. At worst the Jets could check him out and see his status. No team would pay big money for a tackle that can't stay healthy
I guess he wants Tebow to take over badly. Sanchez won't get passed Week 6 with that group on his right side for another season.
Someone said it. Let's just see how it plays out. I don't expect D brick to play that bad, Slauson to play much better now that he'll be healthy. Brandon Moore was solid last year. And then....Hunter.
He went the entire season last year with Hunter at RT. Never missed a game or a series. You're talking out of your ass.
Believing Tannenbaum? Can you blame people for expecting a move for a RT? Tannenbaum's quotes in the media are not the most reliable things to go on.
We really don't have the cap space though. With a 2nd round pick in Ducasse and Hunter coming back you have to think one of those 2 will be playing RT.
I have more faith in a 5th round draft pick RT than Wayne Hunter. How does Rex and Sparano expect to have an offense when every play is getting blown up?
McNiel is washed up and filled with injuries. I remember when McNiel was coming out of college (same year as Brick) he was a highly touted player, but took a deep fall in the draft. Weight and injury was a concern and it finally caught up to him. Also McNiel was never a good pass blocker...
The reason the Jets are staying put is because the blocking scheme is changing. Abyzmul had an excellent post on this shit a while back. But basically Cally's zone blocking scheme requires thought, Sparano's is basically -- block the guy you can touch. That way Rock Head Ducasse can excel and just mash players. This is why the FO is confident the RT will work itself out. That said, I expect the Jets to pick up another team's scraps come cut time.
I have a feeling Ducasse will be the starting RT by mid season. With the change in the blocking system, it should be a lot easier for him. His main issue was understanding who to block. He's an absolute bull otherwise. With the man blocking system, he won't have to think as much. And btw, even with Hunter and Ducasse playing horribly last year, and Mangold getting injured, and Moore coming off a major surgery, the Jets oline was still one of the better o-lines in the league. It's all up to Sanchez now. Let's hope the Tebow trade was a wake up call to Sanchez, and he's practicing non-stop.
I posted this elsewhere but applies here as well: Look at it this way. Last season with Burress slowed by age and unable to get open, and with SB MVP Holmes doubled every snap, it took FOREVER for our down field pass plays to open up. This greatly highlighted our weakness at RT, as Hunter was simply unable to provide Mark with 3-4+ seconds of clean protection every snap. Bring in Hills. With his 4.3 40 time, Hills will be the fastest player on the field, and will demand over/under coverage. This also means Santonio will see about half the coverage in 2012 that he saw every game in 2011. Which all means that this year Sanchez can release the ball to an open receiver in under 3 seconds. Which means Wayne Fricken Hunter will win the come back player of the year award.
