This is awesome news. This might be one of the more exciting combines in sometime. Glad Mariota is out there throwing - it shows confidence in his arm, and himself. He doesn't have to be perfect by any means, he can silence some critics this Saturday for sure.

Winston really has nothing to lose in throwing, but to see those 2 complete against each other again in the Combine, I think it's going to be exciting.

    Great move.

I think this shows a tremendous amount of smarts on both their parts but I think even more so for Winston. He needs to do everything he can do to show maturity and him not throwing would have been taken as a negative. And added to any negative perception folks have about him.

Was selfishly hoping Mariota wouldn't throw so maybe he'd fall a tad to us, but now they'll both be on display. Really hoping Winston blows it out of the water and TB has to take him.

But I digress, great news and you're right this is going to make for a very exciting combine.

The guy who threw at the combine last year went #3 overall despite having a mediocre day. The guys who didn't throw fell some. Agents notice things like that.

I love this move for Mariota. Maybe not from a falling to the Jets perspective, but for him.

A lot of people question his accuracy when not rolling around and improvising. Standing tall in the pocket, stepping up and making an accurate throw, hitting the receiver in stride, and allowing him to make a play with the ball.

Obviously this is just a workout without pads, but if he can help prove that he can be a pocket passer, that will really help his stock. I still don't know if he can read a defense pre-snap or consistently go through his progressions, but he can help himself in the interview sessions. I assume a portion of the interview is showing him tape of plays and seeing if he knows whats going on with them.

Winston needed to attend to show that he is committed to staying in shape and committed to this whole process. I don't think there are many questions about his on field ability, but he needs to shed his reputation as an immature person. This could help him big time.

The combine throwing drill should be with receivers and defensive backs and a handful of set plays where the reads and progressions are clear. No line play but a guy standing right next to the QB counting down out loud from 5 with a note made of when each throw was made and no throw allowed after 5.

Throwing the ball under no pressure to an uncovered receiver in a dome tells us nothing about how the guys will perform in an NFL game.

So you wouldn't consider it a red flag if he made 4 or 5 completely unaccurate throws?

What would it tell us about his ability to complete passes in an NFL game situation? All it would tell us was that he was having a bad day at the combine, throwing to uncovered receivers while volunteers waved brooms at him. I'm not even sure they do the brooms at the combine.

I do think the combine should be used to move people down. Instead it often moves them up, which is a bad way to use the evaluation process given the amount of tape that is out there on each of these guys.

One of the problems with the combine is they do it in a dome. Positive pressurization always makes people buy more and higher than they otherwise would.

Lovie Smith sounds like he wants Jameis real bad in Tampa...That leaves Titans and Jets right now unless a team moves up for mariota.

idk why but as excited i've been about Mariota possibly landing here the more i start to think about the negatives of drafting him, and it's taking it's toll. Mariota could barely squeeze the ball into tight windows in College and never took snaps from under center, like Geno... i'm just worried about him being a bust and a wasted high pick. However i do feel that the Jets and Eagles may be the best situations for him to go to..I'd be more worried if i was Tampa

Don't do that yourself....mentioning him and Geno in the same sentence. You just can't do it.:D

It's on now. Can't wait to watch this process from here on in. NFLN and ESPN will have hours upon hours of stuff on both of them. They're gonna be dissected on TV
