Full article Nick Mangold says he's "50-50" to attend minicamp next week ยป By Manish Mehta Nick Mangold may be a no-show for the Jets' minicamp next week. The All-Pro center said he was "50-50" to attend next week's three-day mandatory minicamp. (He'd be subject to a fine if he decided to skip the sessions). Mangold, who is entering the final year of his five-year rookie contract, admitted that skipping minicamp "is always a consideration." He's also fully aware that the Jets could slap the franchise tag on him next year rather than extend him this season. "That definitely is a possibility that they could say, 'Hey, we're going to let you play through and franchise you later,'" Mangold told the Daily News. "I think that will put a sour taste in my mouth that they'll let me play it out without the security of having years on my contract. I think that would be a disappointing way for the relationship to continue on." "I wouldn't put it past them to do it," Mangold added. "But we'll cross that bridge if it gets to that." In an ideal world, Mangold, arguable the best player at his position, would received money comparable to Rams' center Jason Brown's monster deal last year. "It's not quantum physics," Mangold said. "I assume this is just the way that it goes. You battle it out as needed." Although David Harris insisted that he's not thinking about his new contract -- the linebacker is in the final year of his rookie contract too -- Mangold left little doubt that it's on his mind. "Of course, I think about it," Mangold said. "I got a short career. It's always on the back of my mind. It's been on the back of my mind since February when they said, there's x, y and z why weren't not doing it." The center also said the contract talks have taken some of the fun out of the game this offseason. "It takes a little bit out," Mangodl said. "I don't want to have to deal with it. I'm forced into dealing with it. It's kind of a pain." Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2010/06/nick-mangold-says-hes-50-50-to.html#ixzz0qTnoWEx0
yea good read to bad it's more bad news as it seems, but hey we got all these guys this year for the big run and we can figuer the rest out from there...
Let him pout on the sidelines right along w/ Revis. It doesn't take a genius to understand WHY the F.O. is handling this the way they are. And if he cared at all about this team which he stands to spend the majority of his career with..he'd keep his mouth shut and let the process run its course. Boohoo Nick.
I said it once I'll say it again Priority 1: Re-sign Mangold and D'Brick Priority 2: Re-sign Revis In THIS off-season of course
in their defense....these players witnessed what happened to Leon after he passed on his big money deal....and in essence, want their financial security locked up in a reasonable time frame. Both sides have their reasons. Revis' demands are a little skewed...but he certainly deserves his big money contract....and so does Mangold.
That's why I have no issue letting them cry to the media and sit on the sidelines. All that does is show their true colors as being money grubbers. There's only mass panic and public pressure to re-sign holdouts for so long before the tide turns and fans turn on them. That's when they realize they have no leverage. It may not be pretty..but the jets hold all the cards here...and frankly they aren't being unreasonable.
That's cool your in defense, but people like Leon, Kendall, Baker all of them had their chance they had fair deals on the table and wanted more, it's the greed that's completely fucking them over and where are they now either unsigned, retired or royally fucked for the rest of their careers, I'm not saying Revis and Mangold are next in line but they need to get their head out of their asses and chill the fuck out Do they really care about the team or their teammates or do they care about themselves and only themselves, it's such bullshit for them to act this way, 1 game away from the SB, I agree he deserves his contract but he needs to understand he's NOT GETTING 16 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR, REVIS AND HIS AGENT NEEDS TO GET IT THROUGH HIS HEAD, we have other people to resign and we don't even have a CBA yet, so why are they acting like such babies, they will be resigned, they are lucky to be playing this game and getting paid millions in the first place, the greed is completely taking over in this organization and I don't like it, it's going to ass fuck us in the end, and you know what for reason and reasons like this we won't win the big one cause they are acting like such babies, you will be taken care of just play the game you were destined to play This all just makes me so fucking angry that they have to act this way, especially in front of the media, where is their poise, why can't they stay cool ... Whatever Revis lose your 20 million if you care that much. Us as fans care too much about these players sometimes and i'm losing complete faith in Revis and Mangold as people They are ruining their own image, it won't be pretty but Tanny can't just lay down
Contract disputes are a GOOD problem to have. Why? Because it means your team is stocked with above avarage talent. It means you have more talent than you can afford, perhaps. We COULD have a team full of C- players all happy as hell to playout the season for the league minimum. A team full of A+ players that all deserve top pay is a team worth paying to go see play football!!!!
There really won't be a SB run if all these key players are distracted all season with contract issues. If I were Mangold or Revis or Harris and I didn't have a good contract extension I'd be worried as hell to get injured and end up gone like Leon Washington. That translates into not playing as hard and pulling up on plays. So very simply, if we have contract issues going into the regular season we won't have a SB run. And if the contract issues are protracted in the off-season the players won't be as prepared as they should be for a SB run - so that could affect our chances as well.
Remember Woody Johnson said that is was "unlikely that the Jets would extend Mangold this off-season" just a few weeks ago
This team ain't won shit yet as far as I know. Not even so much as a SB appearance. Yet somehow, we're stocked with AllPros and Superstars. We WILL have a team of the Core 4, Sanchez and 48 other guys that barely deserve a number on their jerseys. This greed shit will take this team down sure as hell..
All of you complaining because they want to get paid are Morons. This is a Business first and foremost. Yes they love the game, but they need to look out for themselves and families because the front office sure as hell aren't. How dare they want to get paid for being the best players at their position in the NFL, are you kidding? Seriously they have every right to bitch when the front office tells them one thing, and then pulls their usualy crap. After seeing what the Jets have done to their talent in the past there is no way I would trust them. You people crack me up, you act like they are playing only because they are Jets Fans.
The Jets really need to re-sign Mangold. Obviously this is tough thing to do at the moment, because the potential for a lockout makes bonus money problematic, however Mangold is at the heart of the team and the precedent has been set that centers can make a lot of money in free agency. Letting him get to free agency in 2011 when the Jets have no idea if the franchise player option will be available to them is just a huge mistake if it happens. If the owners lockout the players the most likely reaction from the players will be to decertify the NFLPA. That will give the owners nobody to negotiate with for a new CBA but more importantly it will immediately invalidate the existing contract rules since one of the parties that agreed to them is no longer in existence. No franchise player, no salary cap, no restrictions on the movement of players not playing under an existing contract. At that point the Jets need to have their stars under contract or they'll be ex-Jets in a hurry.
