http://www.newsday.com/sports/print...704jul29,0,2088115.story?coll=ny-sports-print BY KEN BERGER Newsday Staff Writer July 29, 2006 Eric Mangini revealed Friday that receiver Justin McCareins was placed on the physically- unable-to-perform list because he didn't pass the team's conditioning test necessary to begin training camp. In the process, the Jets' new coach sent a message that his doghouse is open for business and that it's a very public place. "He just didn't pass the criteria that we had to start practice," Mangini said after the first practice of his first training camp. "I'm not going to put anybody on the field that can't pass the criteria to get on the field, because it's not safe for them and it's not what we expect." McCareins missed the final practice of June minicamp with a foot injury, but Mangini said, "This has nothing to do with an injury." As expected, the coach offered no elaboration on Curtis Martin's status as he tries to recover from surgery on his right knee. Martin, McCareins, center Trey Teague and defensive back Rayshun Reed can be removed from the PUP list and return to practice at any time. Contact sport already Is practice different under Mangini than it was under Herman Edwards? Just ask Phil Silva. Silva, a 6-3, 220-pound undrafted rookie receiver, was leveled by linebacker Victor Hobson in a jarring collision during a one-on-one tackling drill. Edwards and many other NFL coaches don't believe in tackling during practice because of the injury risk, but Mangini believes it's necessary. If you can't stand the heat Mangini had the players in full pads on Day 1, in contrast with Edwards, who ran a lighter-contact practice with only helmets and shoulder pads on the first day last year. The first practice lasted 2 hours, 25 minutes in sweltering heat - 25 minutes longer than scheduled. The second practice went 2 1/2 hours for a grueling five hours on the first day. Jet streams LB Jonathan Vilma watched video of Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi in the offseason to help him adjust to the Jets' new defense ... Trevor Johnson worked with the starting defense ahead of Bryan Thomas at weak outside linebacker.
i still cant believe we traded 2nd rd pick to get this guy. screw the pick why did we trade for him at all. he gets worst every year.
Ok, this is the overreaction of the year, especially since everyone, well 99% of people, loved the trade...
This is why we should all realize that GMs SHOULD know more about guys then fans. Bradway made the move to get J-Mac and we loved it. It made sense because he was big and fast plus he had a great average yard per catch stat. Bradway traded Moss for Coles and we loved that too because Moss (on the Jets) was a track star. On the Skins Moss is the #1 WR we had envisioned when we drafted him. Point is - Bradway made moves that FANS would make, while Mangini, so far, is making moves that is going to actually improve our team.
So far, I love everything this coach is doing. Let's pray that he'll grow into the position and bring us a championship.
Yes when I question why would Tenn trade a WR with his stats especially his YPC. The response from all the abili posters was he was a xtra cause they had so many good receivers he was the 3rd man out. Wonder what those posters have to say now.
You have a point, but in Bradway's defense, the Titans already had Derrick Mason, Drew Bennet and Tyrone Callico, and had other needs to fill. W/ McCareins going into a contract year at the time, and the team on the brink of cap hell, they decided to cut ties and get what they could. By all accounts the trade made sense for both sides at the time, unfortunately McCareins has never really looked that comfortable in NY.
W// all the Lb's we brought in this offseason, the fact that johnson is currently starting is a big time statement. I know last season DH was toying w/ him as an LB..but truthfully he didnt fit the bill as a 4-3 type of LB who could play in space. However, he does have some intriguing skills as a hybrid 3-4 linebacker. His size is perfect for the position and he has a pretty good motor that'd be valuable in terms of rushing the passer. I still think in the end, that BT takes the spot and has success..but this certainly makes for good competition.
It still isn't clear why Justin didn't pass the conditioning tests...nothing specific is being said about it, everyone here is jumping the gun and asking for his head on a platter. He was injured through mini-camp and probably set him back in his work outs. He was placed on the PUP list before any of this got out so I don't get why people here are so surprised.
The other poster was basically saying he was worhtless when in fact he was crucial to our success in 2004. He struggled last year, we had FIVE QBs playing, a beat up OL and no running game. NO WR would put up great #s w/ those odds against them. Let's see what happens this year.
What success did we have in 04? I do not remember us being World Champions. Did I miss something along the way?
Another postseason appearance, only the 11th time in team history, we won at least 1 playoff game for the 6th time in history, we won only our 8th postseason game all time, we won our 1st road playoff game since Jan '82 and only the 3rd road playoff win in our history. If you missed that then why do you follow this team?
No... That's not why they traded him. They were up against the cap and they had a choice.. Keep Bennett or McCareins. Both were restricted free agents and they could not afford to give both a new contract. At the time, Bennett was a lesser player, and came a lot cheaper.
You're arguing apples with an orange merchant man. Just forget about it. As far as JMac, I fully supported bringing him here. However, I want him shipped out of town as fast as possible now. He has been more than a mere disappointment. This newest situation just goes to support what I was saying during last season, JMac is lazy. He doesn't like to put effort into his work. He is fully content to collect his check. Good for Mangini parking his ass on the bench. Let Cotchery get his shot. Maybe this opens the option for that QB-turned-WR now. Good, we can use those trick plays. Sadly, we are probably better without JMac than with him. What a waste.
This is the best part of the whole story. This guy is truly a leader and will do whatever it takes to prove the critics wrong and prove that he can be a force in the 3-4. Youth?
