All this talk about Eric not helping his players succeed is ridiculous. Just look at what Eric has done for all our "over the hill", "not worth the money", "not the right fit for the team" guys: Kevin Mawae Tennessee Titans Anchoring the leading rushing offense in the league (145 YPG) on the only undefeated team left in the NFL Pete Kendall Washington Redskins Part of the league's 2nd-ranked, rushing offense (155 YPG) on the surprising 6-2 Redskins Jonathan Vilma New Orlean Saints Leading the NFL in tackles with 72; keeping NO playoff hopes alive as the offense struggles through injuries Chad Pennington Miami Dolphins 2nd in the AFC in passing rating, 2nd in the NFL in Passing Yards per attempt (I guess the whole league is dinking and dunking); leading a resurgence in Miami Nicely done Eric. With a track record like this, it won't be long before Leon Washington, Nick Mangold and Jericho Cotchery are ticketed out. The only team Mangini and Tannenbaum are building are the rosters for the AFC and NFC Pro Bowl.
 I agree, once they escape the shackles of the Jets organization, they become pro-bowlers. hmy:
Not many people knew Mawae would stay good this long, so that one doesn't bother me. Kendall bothers me because we were $30 million under the cap and they wouldn't pay him $1 million more to keep him. If he was still on the team he might beat out Moore at the other guard spot, or just be a quality backup at several positions. Vilma, that one hurts. The idea was that he couldn't make the play when a guard got past the nose tackle so he had to go. But in the offseason we went from having the smallest nose tackle to the biggest. Maybe with the Jenkins man-mountain in front of him Vilma could produce. Pennington, he's always a little worse than his stats show, but he was good, has many quality years ahead of him, and we had to give up a 3rd round pick to get BF. If BF doesn't start smiling at the post games, you can forget about him staying for another year.
mawae was coming off an injury and did not appear to be a long term solution. i dont mind losing him. kendall was more of the mangina is the boss crap that was part of mawae being shown the door, thats fine and dandy but the guy was a good player and it was not going to cost much money to keep him on the team after well i dont want to get into the whole they promised me shit but its something that reared its head again this year... douchebaggery on the manginas part vilma was not a good fit in this defense i am glad that he moved on and is being successful, this however is a part of mangina not playing the defense to what his players strengths are instead forcing what he wants to do onto guys that dont have the skills to do it. so we might as well get rid of a bunch of guys and bring in a bunch of new guys. pennington is pennington, his time here was done he is not terribly good and was not leading us anywhere so i have no problem with him going. i would have to say that the mangina is doing a very nice job putting people in a position to win and play to their best, on other teams. btw was that nick harper formerly of the jets playing so well out there in titanland?
I don't think it has anything to do with how long he had left, Mawae was getting injuries but he wasn't injury-prone throughout his career. Mangini, in essence, was hired through that coaching network that started with Parcells. The last coach from that network to run the team was Al Groh, and you can bet Mangini called Groh for advice. Groh was publicly indicated by Mawae to be a problem because of the intensity of his practices. Mangini obviously had planned to have tough practices ahead of time. What do you think Groh would have remembered immediately when Mangini brought up that plan? 'Mawae cried to the press'. Kevin had been the Jets' NFLPA rep for years and he had a lot of clout when it came to ethical training methods in the league. He didn't like the fact that he gave up a coach who practiced light for one that was a practice clone to Groh. Mawae was cut because he had a strong personality and Mangini, very unlike Parcells who many people want this young head coach to be the reincarnation of, could not hope to be able to control or contain him. He gave up before he even tried. As much as I like Mangold, Mawae went because our head coach was incapable of dealing with a grizzled, all-pro veteran center who has control issues. That is not a vote of confidence for me.
abyzmul, my theory is that Mangini never would have made DC if the NFL owners club wasn't obsessed with hiring Pats assistans for so many years. From '01 to '06 the Pats coaching staff was like a giant Pez dispenser popping out coaches and then all the others move up one spot. Without that I don't think Mangini makes DC in NE. And without being friends with Tannenbaum he doesn't get hired away. Mangini won the career lottery, but I bet a time will come when he wishes he got that law degree his parents were always telling him to get.
The more I think about it, the more I think of how we hired Herm. Recommendations and friend connections and inexperienced candidates. I wonder if Woody will ever take a chance on a guy with a track record.
Or Mawae was old and not really playing up to the level we're used to? It's not like he's the plus player on the Titans O-line. I've heard many Titans fans call him the weak link in their O-line. Even if it's partially true...is Mangini setting any precedence by doing something like this?
Yeah, Vilma's doing a great job. Saw him in person on Sunday and he's still racking up the tackles 5-6 yards downfield. Go Jon!
Everyone of those players was replaced by either better or younger players, so what´s your point? btw, you forgot about Abe
Exactly. George Sour Jr.'s quote should have been "Jonathan Vilma anchoring one of the worst defenses in the entire league on an underachieving non-playoff team."
the only one im not pleased about losing is vilma. ill take mangold for the next ten years over mawae. ill take faneca over kendall. even with his sloppy performances the last few weeks favre over pennington is still an easy call. it would have been nice to see if vilma could succeed this year with a real nose tackle and david harris next to him. its a long season lets see how many of the four make a pro bowl in the end. and its not like the jets are the only team to let players go and then have to watch them excel on other teams.
Abe was Herm's decision, and while it also would qualify considering his sack total and Atlanta's record, Abraham's decision to quit on the team and his injury history don't make me miss him. He would look good coming off the edge right now, but give it a few more games, he'll be sitting out soon. My point is Mangini has gotten worse as a coach every year, and his decision to jettison quality players while looking for his "precise pieces" has unnecessarily lengthened the team building process. Case in point, if the Jets had given Kendall the money, they could've signed Faneca this year and had two very good guards. Or if they decide to swallow Mawae's big mouth to keep his leadership skills, he could've moved to guard between Mangold and Ferguson and provided mentoring as well as a very good back-up at center. One of the other posters hit the nail on the head as far as Vilma goes...with Jenkins in the fold, Vilma is no longer out of position. It is what it is now, I just question the wisdom of allowing an inexperienced guy come in and jettison 1st round draft picks because he's afraid he'll be usurped. What kind of leader is that?
Also don't forget what came out of JAbe deal (Mangold) Mangold >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Healthy JAbe to my eyes. Or... his assessment skill sucks, if I might add? The world is seeing it wasn't Pennington's fault that he was dinking and dunking in the past few seasons at Jets. Now Brett is doing that *but this time, with a few downfield INT that Chad wouldn't have thrown.* I do agree with some of his personnel moves - Dslob had to go. I'm all for it. But Vilma and Pennington definitely leaves a sour taste in my mouth. It's not likely to see Kendall being the point of attack, but he can pull. (That's what made him a good run blocking guard - atheletic, quick interior lineman) So if Faneca is leading the attack, Kendall could follow the suit. In fact, Harris could be the run-stuffing ILB while Vilma could float behind Harris, defending pass or providing 2nd line run support. Jets didn't need trade away all the pieces that were here - they had to get rid of Schotty and Sutton.
If you bash Mangini for that you also gotta give him credit for the players he brought here. Would you take Mangold, Brick, Leon, Revis, Harris, Lowery, Jenkins, Pace, Faneca, Woody, Favre, TJones, Stuckey, Coleman or Mawae, Kendall, Vilma, Chad ????????????????????????????
Yes I have been watching Penny every week & it shocks me how poised & efficent he looks in the Miami O vs how unpoised & unefficent he looks in our O. For sure it has to be the CS of the blow holes that has brought Penny to a new level vs Shotty & our coaches which kept Penny at a lower level
Abraham isn't playing nearly as many snaps, and he's having a productive year -- so, I think we were probably just playing him too much here.
Ya know these guys have their issues, but if you're running a company and you have guys you can't control, you need to send them elsewhere. There's nobody on that list that we haven't upgraded at the position by releasing them. Vilma was useless. Pennington is going to look good in the regular season and mostly between the 20s. Without the fade he has nada. He can't bring you back from a deficit to beat teams, like Favre did last week. If that was Pennington we never win that game. Mawae was not the game changer for the Titans and Kendall is just a big mouth. Let's be realistic here...these guys aren't the greatest set of coaches, and niether were their predecessors, or even their predecessors, but they're young and that's what should have been expected. The Jets will never win another superbowl, and that's just the cold hard truth. The Jets will never win over their fans because we all suffer by our own accord by picking a team with a history of misery. You can't tag along with a loser and get upset when they continue to lose. Get over it or find another team. It's pretty simple.
