Congrats, Mac! Jets first-year general manager Mike Maccagnan has received the Pro Football Writers Association's prestigious Executive of the Year award. Maccagnan was recognized by the PFWA for coming to the Jets organization in January, joining forces with first-year head coach Todd Bowles, and setting the table for the Jets' 10-6 season, their first winning record in five years and a record that marked a six-win improvement over the previous season. "I don’t know that I went into the season with an idea of a certain number of wins or losses that was going to be a benchmark because you really don’t know what happens with injuries and stuff like that," Maccagnan said at his final news conference of the season. "But we were happy with the progress we’ve made." Full story here: http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...the-Year/7b93bf5e-7384-45cd-8c1b-b254dae65099
I just came here to make this exact post, beat me to it. Well deserved by Mac, he did a great job. Time for an encore, however, and the circumstances will necessitate a little more magic this time around. I'm confident in the direction we're headed and believe we've got the right man for the job.
Man I hate to be a debbie-downer about this but with well over $100 million to spend on players I think most anyone in street clothes would've came out with a much better roster and season results than last year. With that being said his first draft looks solid. No Jets GM has really been able to overcome that 2nd round pick curse too effectively, but it's too early in Devin Smith's career to judge. Brandon Marshall and Fitzpatrick were great acquisitions but they seemed to be handed to us. Chicago invested a ton of money into Cutler and for the second time in both their careers they started to not get along so it seems much easier to ship out the older cheaper receiver. Rick Smith seemed to be taken to school by Maccagnan on the way he handled the Texans quarterback situation.
To be fair, I think the acquisitions of James Carpenter and Marcus Gilchrist were fantastic, underrated pick ups, and moves I wasn't entirely sold on at the time. Mac had the foresight to see what these guys could bring to the table and that gives me confidence that he can evaluate talent at a high level beyond the obvious pick ups, a la Revis or Marshall. Completely agree that he has his work cut out for him much more so this offseason than last, but again I'm confident in his talent evaluation abilities across all tiers of free agency and the draft.
Not if this team was coached by the Fins, Bucs or Redskins ... Tell that to the Dolphins and Bucs who seemingly spend millions on FAs each and every year. Yet they continue to suck. Every year they say, it's the Dolphins year! In actuality, spending tons of cash in FA doesn't equate to regular season success IMO.
I guess so. I hope he looks at what we did in 2009 and 2010 and uses it as a learning experience and I think he will. Keep your draft picks and don't backload contracts. I just have a bad feeling that this year was the perfect storm for us and we still missed the playoffs. Fitzpatrick has a career year that mirrors what some upper tier quarterbacks have done (see Rivers, Roethlisberger), and we beat up on a ton of bad teams. You can only beat who is on your schedule and we'll see how the offseason shakes out. I'm just playing devils advocate to an extent. Imagine we lose Mo, don't find another good ILB, Mangold and Brick show their age and Sheldon misses 8 games for being an asshat? We could be in for a rocky 6-10, 7-9 next year playing the AFC North and NFC West. The one saving grace is most of our tough games are at home (Seahawks, Bengals, Ravens, Colts). It all comes down to this offseason because it'll basically tell us if we need a longer rebuild period or if we'll have a real chance to compete.
This was the absolute perfect year to make some noise in the AFC. Cardinals / Panthers IMO will win the SB. No one in the AFC can match up with those 2 teams. If I am a Jet, this shit would be eating at me for sometime. Next year a lot of things can go wrong for the Jets. Hopefully they retain Wilk, hit some picks through the draft and continue molding talent.
Eh, it's also easy to spend a bunch of money on free agents and have it all blow up on you. See the early 2000s Redskins and the "Dream Team" Eagles. Fact is he hit on nearly every player he brought in. Cromatrie was probably the worst ROI and even he still put in a pretty decent season. That deserves some props.
Seahawks and Bengals may be tough next year, but we handled the Colts this year and the Ravens are on a downswing. Pittsburgh, Arizona and KC on the road are what scare me. Although I agree with almost everything else you've said in this thread.
Unreal. Your last two paragraphs are completely undermined by your ridiculous first paragraph. Jets fans. Never happy. Always find something to bitch and moan about. Unbelievable. SMH
