Sell me on why I should get a Mac? I'm in the market for a new laptop and was thinking of sucking it up and going with an Apple. A little background, I don't do a lot of heavy duty shit, I don't need it for work but I take a ton of pictures and am addicted to iTunes. I don't really watch a lot of movies and I know it doesn't have a built in DVD player which is kind of shitty but I could always download one from iTunes. The one catch is I really don't know if I can justify spending that much extra money. When it boils down to it what the are the real advantages of getting a Mac vs a PC? Thanks
Oh boy lol you opened a can of worms. Can't help you with a Mac, as I am solely a Windows/Android user, but I just bought an Aspire S7-392 Ultrabook that just fuckin blows me away everyday I use it. Lots of detailed specs involved, that I don't feel like typing, but this machine is a bad ass piece of art. Good luck on your endeavor.
It's really preference for me. I love the trackpad on the Macbook and all the gestures you can use to move between applications, webpages, and etc. I haven't found a non macbook laptop that I feel as comfortable while using the trackpad. I also didn't buy the new Macbooks when I got mine so it was cheaper. I bought the older all white macbook as they were phasing them out so the price was easier to justify. At least for me, the Apple Store repair program has been great, but that's really a user to user experience. If you are not doing a ton of things that will strain the computer itself, it just comes down to preference in my opinion. I really like how I think upgraded my operating system on Macbook 2-3 times and it still runs smoothly and I still get all the updates even though it an older model and now 4 years old. I'm sure non Apple laptops do that too, but just another good experience I had. I feel comfortable using a macbook and even though it is expensive, I will probably trade this current one in to offset the higher price of a new one. But yeah, overall if you are not straining the computer or looking for certain applications, it just comes down if you like using and would you be willing to pay a bit extra for that. I also believe the Macbook Pro without Retina display comes with a DVD drive. But since it is the "Pro" not air, I bet it is a couple hundred more expensive than the lowest Macbook price. I would definitely try one out before making the dive, which I think is good reasoning for computer/tablet/phone choices. Oh and the magnetic power cord has saved my laptop from some serious falls! How could I forget that? The power cord that connects to the macbook isn't a type you plug in, it is magnetic and so if you trip on the power cord, instead of the whole laptop coming along for the ride, the power cord just pops out of the macbook and saves the laptop. Again, I'm sure other laptops have this feature, but it has saved me.
See but here's where I am with this. Years ago, this was very accurate with Macs. If you were looking for a solid built unibody laptop with a super long battery life and a user friendly keyboard and trackpad, you were buying a Mac. The design is beautiful, the usability is easy, and the convenience was awesome. This all changed when companies began producing ultrabooks for Windows. Let's take my computer for example, only because I have one so I can speak with experience. I also had a Mac years ago. My Aspire S7 is an all aluminum unibody frame, chicklet keyboard, and the most identical trackpad to Mac you will ever see. Now let's take a look at the comparison in specs: S7: Screen size (diagonal): 13.3 inches Technology: IPS LCD Backlight: LED Resolution (X): 1920 px Resolution (Y): 1080 px MacBook Air: Screen size (diagonal): 13.3 inches Technology: LCD Backlight: LED Resolution (X): 1440 px Resolution (Y): 900 px S7: CPU brand: Intel CPU family: Haswell Model: Core i5-4200U Cores: 2 Clockspeed: 1.6 GHz MacBook Air: CPU brand: Intel CPU family: Haswell Model: Core i5 Cores: 2 Clockspeed: 1.3 GHz S7: Base drive type: Flash (SSD) Base drive capacity: 128 GB Max. config SSD: 256 GB Card reader: Yes Card reader support: SD Macbook Air: Base drive type: Flash (SSD) Base drive capacity: 128 GB Max. config SSD: 512 GB Card reader: Yes Card reader support: SD Only thing that Mac really sits on a different level is the battery. S7 lasts about 8 hours and MacBook Air lasts about 12. But honestly, I have never come near to needing 8 hours of battery. By that time I charge it when I go to bed and it's fresh for use all day.
Yeah like I said, I'm sure there are other laptops with the features I listed, I'm just listing off what I enjoyed with my macbook. I'm sure other laptops match it, so going forward it is just a preference thing. My preference is still with macbook and the mac operating software so if I do upgrade it will probably be to another macbook.
Exactly. MacBooks are truly works of art. Just like anything technology based, there will always be something that matches or beats the competition. It's a never ending circle lol OP, just like displacedfan said, the best thing you can do is to try them all out. Pick the one that fits what you are looking for and feels the best for you. It's all a personal preference.
I went to Best Buy last night and was messing with the Mac Book Air with 13 inch screen. It really was a nice smooth process. What I like about the Best Buy near me is they won't push you to buy the most expensive thing. I was looking at the Pro and the salesman was like the retina display isn't worth the extra 200 dollars it's gonna cost you for what you need it for. I really went in thinking of the Pro with retina display but now I like the Air. I'm going to be doing a bit of traveling so it's obviously convenient for me in that regard. I'm not a gamer so I don't need ultra high def. I surf the web, take a lot of pictures and listen to music. The battery life is awesome almost 12 hours and it's got good speed. I've got over 5K songs on my iTunes and it barely dents the memory. I have a nice camera (Sony Cyber Shot DSC-HX300) which takes amazing pictures but even on the Air the photos I could see were crisp, and had lots of definition. I'm still not 100% decided that I want this over a Windows operating but my thought process is by the time I get Windows and all the programs to go with it and anti virus the money is going to come out about the same anyway. I haven't see any new laptops that have impressed me like the Macs but to be honest I haven't really looked to hard. I saw a cool Lenovo but it was about 700 dollars. When I factor in the additional costs there really sin't too much difference in price
Check out the laptop I quoted above that I have, Aspire s7-392. Not sold at Best Buy though. Anti Virus is free either way unless you want to pay for an unnecessary amount of coverage. I have a free software that has saved me from Viruses a million times over. Had my previous laptop for over 5 years and maybe got a virus twice. I never pay for anti virus And if you have your songs invested in iTunes, then you answered your own question. No point in switching to a Windows computer when you have thousands of songs in iTunes.
Worst thing about today's Windows machines is Windows 8. I hate everything about it. Geared much more towards being used like a touchscreen (which mine is) but the tile layout annoys the shit out of me. I bought a run of the mill i5 Asus, and I realize my older i7 Dell blew it away. Never been a mac fan but strictly because I find Windows more user friendly (until 8 came around). If you go with Windows, I recommend downloading Classic Shell. It's awesome and brings back 90% of the 7 functionality.
I'm with you, while I don't mind the touch screen I could see some potential issues with it. When I looked at the cost the Lenovo I saw was 829 and that doesn't come with Microsoft Office which I absolutely need so that's another 150 bucks. I have decided I am not going to spend 750+ on a windows laptop because I just don't see the value so my options look like an iMac Air or a cheap HP or Aesus that I can use until it breaks for 400 bucks. I guess the thing really holding me back is do I really want to invest that much money into a lap top.
For what it's worth, my brother (a programmer) is praying on Mac. He says it's faster, easier to use, much more intuitive and lasts much longer. No viruses to worry about and according to him since Win 8 release choosing Mac is a no-brained. I have Asus that's ok for now, but for my next one will seriously consider Mac. If you choose Mac, could you please leave a review after 1-2 weeks? I'd love to know opinion of a long time Win user after switching to Mac.
Yeah I'll let you know, problem is I won't be buying it until I pay off my Best Buy card in about 2 months
Your brother the programmer said that? lol... I'm gonna leave this one alone.. I think everyone already knows how I feel about macs... so yea.
Hi RJF Do you know why Mac's don't have any virus issue? Is it because Mac OS is better or virus programmers don't bother? Hi RT Please advise if you have a link to your review on Mac. I also would like to get a Mac but I am on the fence.
Macs get viruses. Every single laptop is capable of getting a virus. There is no computer on this planet unable to get a virus. Back in 2012 "nearly 600,000 Macs were infected with a malicious trojan named "Flashback" or "Flashfake." The breach in security was a reality check for many Mac owners who believed their computers to be immune to such attacks." The fact is, there are more Windows owned laptops in the world. More schools use Windows, as do more work forces. People seeking to infect users with viruses are geared toward the cheaper and most common desktop, Windows. Mac has three main options of computer, MacBook Pro, MacBook Desktop, and MacBook Air. None of which can be bought for less than $900. Windows has about a thousand different types of laptops and desktops, many of which can be had for sub $300. It's cheaper and much easier to target a Windows model than it is a Mac. In fact, Apple completely dropped their bullshit claim stating "Macs do not get viruses" after that outbreak.
Here's the S7 I was talking about earlier that I just got. This thing is fuckin amazing All aluminum body, chiclet keyboard, huge aluminum trackpad, gorilla glass on outer and inner screen, and an amazing back-lit keyboard. Love this Damn thing Can't get my girlfriend off it and she has a Mac
Notice who Acer is copying.. Lol. Apple = simplicity You can deff get a better computer with better specs for much less, but the OS is simple and it just works... If you have an iPhone or any other Apple devices they all connect to each other seamlessly. All relative though.. If you are only doing web browsing and music downloading, save yourself $500 or more and just get a Windows laptop... If you plan on doing video editing/picture editing, go with the Mac.
