He has done a great job with our special teams. He also has been around forever and only coached special teams. What is it about him that has so many of you pushing for him to get shot at head coach job. Because he runs around and screams like a lunatic. I must assume its this because I don't see anything else that qualifies him.

Maybe he is the only coach the Jets have had in the past 10 years to show any emotion.

The last 3 coaches of the Jets had nothing that qualified them to be an NFL head coach. At least Westhoff has run a phenomenal unit for the last decade on two different teams.

As Clint Eastwood can attest, people love cranky old men

Because he said he wants to be considered.

And out of respect for what he has done so well for so many years, I think he deserves that shot, not that there is a chance of him being named HC.

I don't know why this couldn't have been added to the westhoff thread.

    Very true.

Westhoff as a HC would be an epic fail IMO.

Westhoff is the best short-term solution. If we want to put ourselves into play for Cowher, Homlgren, etc... next year, Westhoff is worth a shot. He's experienced & respected in the lockerroom. If he succeeds, great. If not, he's a guy we can have a quick hook with.

I think Westhoff should get an interview as people have said above. The guy has done an excellent job and if he wants a shot to interview and show what he can do then I believe he should.

He's a great coordinator and a fiery coach but every time I think about him as HC I keep thinking about Dick LeBeau in Cincinnati. I'd like to see him retained on the staff but that's as far as I'd go.

Vermeil began as a ST coordinator, actually the first one in the history of the NFL, for the Rams, but between then and Philly he had a few assistant and head coaching jobs in the college level, I believe. He's the only one that comes to mind.

    Does it really matter?

    it's a ridiculous precedent.

A ST coach works with both offesnive and defensive players.

westhoff has a good feel for the game, good knowledge of it, good familiarity with the team personnel, he is respected by them, he gets them them to perform to a high standard, and there would be less of an abrupt transition for the team than if a totally new guy came in.

Guys there is a HUGE thread dedicated to Westhoff, most of the things you ask are already there.
