When he said the Jets were on the phone with small school pass rushing phenom Chris Gocong, telling him he was their next pick {after trading down from 71 to 76 with Philly}, but then Philly lowered the boom!

Here it is, right from the horses mouth

The draft was such an exciting event for me. I got a call from the Jets
telling me they were interested in taking me. I was surprised to see
them trade down from the 71st pick to 76th, but they reassured me they
would pick me at that spot. The Eagles had traded up from 76 to 71.

I was still on the phone with the Jets when the Eagles called. I didn't
want to hang up on the Jets because I didn't know who was calling. I
figured I would go to the Jets because it was coming up and I didn't
know what was going on behind the scenes.

I didn't realize that the Eagles had traded up to get me and were
    calling to tell me so!

Suddenly, everybody was going crazy. My name went across the television
screen, announcing that I had been picked by the Eagles.

I didn't even see my name at first. The people around went crazy and that's when I looked up and saw it.

    Chris Gocong

PS. Sorry if this was already posted ... I looked but didn't see it

Anyway, no more mystery or speculation involved, Jets Got burnt on Gocong

Now all we can do is hope Anthony Schlegel makes it a moot point

If that was who the Jets really wanted why did they risk it and trade down 5 spots? Thats the weird part...

Im disappointed it happened but as you said, maybe Anthony Schlegel will make it all worth it. We'll just have to address it next year thru the draft I guess

Wouldve liked Gocong AND Schlegel though

    OLB) Thomas
    ILB) Schlegel
    ILB) Vilma
    OLB) Gocong

What a corps that wouldve been.

Yes, our funky-named LB corps would almost have been complete. All we'd need is to draft OLB Anthony Mutyrahgsdktl, bvgns from Southern Whattheshit State in the second round and we could rename the team the New York Steelers.

Dude what kind of a name is Vrabel? What about Banta-Cain? And Bruschi reminds me of Bruschetta...

Obviously the Patriots knew what they were doing when they signed these funky name players. Its clear that this is the method they used to build their dynasty. We need to follow in their footsteps if we ever want to have any sucess in this league

The Pats and the Steelers. Who would have thought, the funkiness of the name is in direct correlation to the value of the player?

They'd shown no interest predraft in Gocong...., they hadn't even assessed him, so the Jets assumed the Eagles had no interest in him. That was why the Jets traded down to 76, and then got sucker punched by the Eagles.

Disappointing to say the least....but these things happen in the draft.

Everytime I hear Anthony Schlegel's name I keep picturing him recovering a fumble and muttering "MY PRECIOUS!!!". Name just sounds weird...lol.

aw man, that sucks. Just as you predicted though. Well, that's a real shame, but I think pass-rushing OLB in a 3-4 has got to be one of the easiest positions to fill. Maybe I'm just rationalizing.

Looks like Tannebaum tried to get a little cute and got burned. Oh well, maybe he'll learn from this next draft.

Wouldn't it be typical Jets karma if Gocong has a Hall of Fame career??

The logic from Mr T's move was there - Gocong was projected to be 3-4 LB. Phili and I believe all the other teams before #76 were 4-3 defenses. T was thinking. Obviously, a 3-4 LB by Jets standards can possibly be of value in a 4-3 defense. Or can he? You can argue that this was a reach and not a good pick for Phili given the type of system they run. If they were going for best available athlete does it make sense if you're trying to fit a round peg in a square hole? One thing about the Jets draft day - they were consistent in their picks - they got the character type and they got athletes that will fit their scheme, therefore, they just didn't pick best available athlete if the players capabilities didn't suit their scheme. If they couldn't live without Gocong they wouldn't have gambled.

A + out of all of this is they got another pick - Titus Adams. Take that for what it is. And for every action there is a reaction. If the trade wasn't made we speculate that it would be Gocong and Schlegel. Maybe. But given that, there definitely would be no Titus Adams and the subsequent picks may have been different. For instance - maybe the Jets don't get Washington. Not getting Chocong is not going to determine whether the Jets get to the SB.

Ohio State football is a little bit more competitive than Cal-Poly... Gocong was standout where he played, but as far as I know he never even proved he could play at the same level as Smeagol.

All you need is that mutant dodgeball player woman and your set.

If this is true than Tangini made a mistake. What I find interesting is that the Jets did not put a restriction on the trade with the Eagles on the player Gocong. I know they do this in the 1st round maybe it is not done in later rounds. If they wanted Gocong that badly they should have drafted him.

I think the plan was to trade down to take Gocong and then finish the first day with Schlegal who likely would have been there at the end of day one. They tried to get to cute and got burned.. IMO it comes down to Eric Smith making missing out on Gocong moot, not Schlegal.. I think the draft would have been a bona fide A+ if we came out of the 3rd with Gocong & Schlegal. Eric Smith was easily the worst pick of the draft, hopefully he works out though.
