I don't know how the offense the Jets are planning to run uses the FB, but if they are looking for a pure blocking FB in the Lorenzo Neal/Sam Gash mode than I can see the Jets going after a FB like Bernstein. Considering we share the last name I would love to see the Jets draft him.
Undersized? BJ is 6 foot 3 and 230 plus pounds...if anything he may be a bit too tall...I really like him and his desire to start...I think he would be an awesome threat to have as a FB...so no I don't think weshould look for one.
I love Bernstein, I think that he would be a prefect fit for the Jets off. He needs to work on his catching ablity but he is a good hard nose unselfish player that isnt going to want to be in the spotlight, great qualities for a fullback. I am waiting to buy his jersey.
Well there are 2 things, and yes I like what BJ can provide with his pass catching skills. 1. Askew is not a pure grinder FB, something the Jets may or may not be looking. 2. You need at least 5 backs on the roster, Martin, Houston, Blaylock, and Askew.
BJ should be the starter, as far as him being undersized he was the same size as Richie Anderson and he worked out fine. We did address a backup for now. http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show_article?article_id=559&short_name=transactions
yea seriously...using a pick on a fb is terrible it was bad enough when we drafted askew in the 3rd frickin round...he better get a shot
BJ was a third freakin' round pick. ( too high for a FB in my opinion ) having said that ....he deserves a shot at the starting position. FB is the least of our worries.
BJ was a third round pick, he should get a shot at starting. But I just dont believe in him just yet, he's a bit small and when he did play I never remember seeing anything that impressed me.
FYI - We signed a rookie FA Michael Warren as a FB - I don't know if anyone remembers the news on this, it sort of slipped through the cracks...
I love Bernstein. Askew is a better athlete than he is fullback. Bernstein absolutely punishes anyone in front of him. It's like putting a fast guard back there. I'll take him with a 6th or 7th round pick.
First off you do draft fullbacks, if you dont how are you going to get them. This is my post from another thread: The problem with the fullback postion now a days is that no one is using then right. Rathman and Johnson where just as important to the Cowboys and Niners as the oline was and for a team that has a make shift oline like the Jets a true fullback would help them out alot (not saying draft a fb in the first round but I like Bernstien - Wis) it give you a good dump off guy when the QB gets in trouble, opens holes for the running back against the LB and Safeties, picks up the blitz and missed blocks better then the h back or running back can, which give your te, rb, wr and qbs a better chance to get there job done - moving the football and get look over all the time like they arent important. Listen to some of the interviews with the skill players on the old Cowboys and Niner teams they all bring up the FBs. Oh yea Warren is not a fullback he is a linebacker from div. 2, that got moved to fb.
Game has change but that doesnt mean that your running back and qb dont need protection and most teams have and use a fullback (most fullbacks are not real fbs and suck at blocking) the Jets could use a real fb to help out the oline. If I was Houston or Chad I would want to have a real fullback to protect my ass. You can get undrafted fa if you want a half ass fullback. Every year fullbacks get taken in the draft. Berstien would be a great later round pick up for the Jets. 53 fb's have been taken since 1998, 3 - 2nd round, 8 - 3rd round, 11 - 4th round
guys back then were drafted as FB's because there were more rounds you get FB's by signing them, whether they didn't get picked in the draft or hit the FA market
