I think it's about time that we discussed the rules of acceptability for adults and their use of the LOL. I don't have any issues with a simple LOL here and there. It conveys a quick gesture and is mostly forgivable. I'm guilty of an occasional LOL, although I usually will opt for lower case. What are your thoughts on ROFLMAO?
I feel like lol has become an insincere pleasantry more often than not. Or maybe I’ve just turned it into that personally. A generic response to something someone wanted you to find funny but it didn’t quite hit the mark. Bang out a quick lol as not to insult the effort without rewarding the failed humor. rotflmao is ust dumb. If it’s that funny take the time to tap out a personal response. I have no use for the acronym and lower my opinions of people that use it.
Rule #1- Don't "LoL" your own post. For instance: "I would be a better guard for the Jets than Van Roten, lol" Me, I prefer a "haha" or a "hilarious".
I’m a fan of lol. It’s just a simple way of acknowledging someone’s attempt at humor or to convey you are not serious or attempting some kind of humor. I always use lol but sometimes stupid auto correct makes it Lol. I also say lol in real life sometimes, it annoys the hell out of my wife but I thinks it’s funny.
The only time i self haha is when im using dry humor in text. Sometimes it can be misconstrued as serious so i like to make it clear. Similar thing happened between me and @IDFjet in the goldenstream thread. I thought he meant something serious and answered seriously but he was joking. Dry humor or sarcasm is hard over text.
Dude, when you wrote that "I took a shit today" response I was fucking guffawing like hip hurting. My 15 year old son had seen it before and agrees the first time you see it its hilarious. That deserved a ROTFLMFAO but its probably used to often.
While I feel this is true, the capitalized LOL is what I use when I actually do really think something's funny and "Haha" just might not be enough. lol has also become a nervous trigger that people put at the end of their own statements to give them the option to renege them if the receiving party does not appreciate the comment. Not all lol's are created equal. ROFLMAO died with AOL Instant Messenger in 2009. The legendary phrase that spawned us the Rofflecopter is now being tarnished here as it's the only place I ever see it used. Let it retire peacefully and gracefully.
First you had an issue with the"like" button... Now you're decrying the use of "lol". You're turning into quite the internet Karen. What's next... abolish the "leave a penny" tray at the Quickie Mart?
I use the thumbs up emoji in texts, but now I’m worried that since the Gen Z’ers don’t use emoji’s literally am I responding to work messages inappropriately by suggesting they let me stick my thumb up their ass. Should I be worried?
Isn't lol also good for taking the edge off--for example "I just lost $50 on xyz" vs. "I just lost $50 on xyz lol".
Idk did you decode the message using the recent research studies? https://www.wpsdlocal6.com/news/wha...cle_a74e7922-ee61-11ea-addd-3b167d1e611b.html
I keep away from using emojis and most of these abbreviations because I have the time to better explain what I really mean. As far as questions raised here, I'm with those who think LOLing one's own writing is weak and, specific to this TGG forum, it seems that ROTFLMAO is rarely used to express any kind of appreciation of someone's humor but almost always to scoff at what someone else has written.
