I live in Northern VA and will be coming to NJ on Friday to go to training camp then staying in NJ and going again on Saturday. I have 3 kids and I told them after the practice on Friday we can run to NY to show them some sites since they have never been there. (I have but stayed in the city so haven't had to drive in). Asking my fellow gang green guys for a bit of help. Obviously I can't truly show them NY in less than a day so being locals if you had just 6 hours or so to see NY what would you do??
I would walk around downtown--financial district and the World Trade Center Memorial park. You get the historical Wall Street area, stock exchange, Washington statue, Trinity Church, the new Freedom Tower, the reflecting pools, the surviving tree, Battery Park City, South Street Seaport, the whole experience is great. Very outdoorsy--lots of streets blocked off to car traffic--open only to pedestrians. And it's all fairly well contained. Btw, when I say the South Street Seaport--I mean the new stretch of restaurants just before the Seaport--on Front Street--that whole area is going to explode soon. Went to a great restaurant Saturday night called Barbalu--but we walked past about 6 other places I'd love to try. There is just too much to do in NYC to do it in one day and spreading your 6 hours over downtown, the Village, mid-town-5th Ave, upper West Side, Central Park--it's just too much. _
Thanks guys. Best mode of transportation? Drive? I was thinking of the 911 memorial as well since it's probably the only place I have not seen.
Where are you staying? The trains from NJ--Secaucus Junction are very convenient. Driving is a pain plus parking is $$. _
You can go into midtown which means Times Square. Take them to the M&M Store, I think there's a Hershey's Store too. A lot of shopping, Broadway shows (Google Broadway discount tickets for sites with good deals), St. Patrick's Cathedral. Of course The Museum of History uptown if you have more time. If you drive in you can find more inexpensive parking I know there's one on 43rd around 6th. Or drive west past the theater district in the 40's for cheaper lots.
Under no circumstances should you drive a car into midtown. Just don't do it. Parking is outrageous and so are the antiquated traffic patterns. Jump on the Path train and come into Penn Station. Grab a subway map, buy some fare tickets and have a good time!
You and your family can stay with me at my house. My house is in Madison, NJ and it is 3 minutes drive to Florham Park. From our town, you can take the train. My wife and kids are in Turkey visiting family so you are welcome to stay at my house. Don't let Stokes fool you. I am not a terrorist
Whatever you do - do not drive in Manhattan. Traffic, $$$ parking, crazy cab drivers, people jaywalking everywhere, and the list can go on and on...
Pay to park your car in Seacaucus and take the train..... there is a lot to see but don't waste your precious time sitting in Manhattan traffic on a Friday night.
My daughter lives downtown so we're in NYC just about every other week and we rarely drive in. Secaucus is just so convenient and easy and it's a 5 minute train ride. We parked there for U2 last Sunday night and it was a complete breeze after the concert getting out of the Garden. Parking and getting out of NYC would have sucked. We were home while folks were still stuck in the tunnel. _
Good for you to take your family from Virginia to check out NYC. I no longer live in NY/NJ area and many people south of Philadelphia are just irrationally scared to venture there. Good luck and you will certainly enjoy it!
Wow, I really appreciate the offer but hotels booked, non refundable. You guys have been a big help, thinking Secaucus is the way to go based on the replies. Looking forward to camp and seeing Revis and Marshall battle it out tomorrow and Saturday. Getting back from Gouverneur at 8 tonight and leaving for Jersey at 7am tomorrow is going to suck though, training camp in Cortland was a hell of a lot easier. I'll be doning my white Chrebet Jersey and 2002 Afc east champions hat again I guess this year. Sure could use a new one that says 2015.
