...that had Allen's size, athleticism and arm talent. So many people (I'll admit I've been guilty of this myself) act as though we've seen guys like Allen before who turn out be busts. I am trying to come up with a list but I'm having a hard time. Jamarcus Russell I guess but his downfall was the sizzurp; does Bortles count as a bust?
Mark Sanchez 6'2 230 lbs coming out of college,Josh Allen 6'5 234lbs.Its like people forget we traded up to get him only it didn't cost us as much,we went from 17 to 6 for our second round pick and 3 players who were mediocre.
Paxton Lynch-Not quite the arm talent but even better size w. decent feet. Played in a gimmicky system.Wasn't good on the board Ryan Leaf- Size & arm talent.Nowhere near the athleticism. Nowhere near the intangibles. Leaf was much more accurate Blake Bortles- In the same stratosphere. Bortles again didn't come from a pro style system & not the same arm strength EJ Manuel- Same size & athleticism. Manuel was kind of a gimmick thrower in college who made big plays in the clutch. I'd say Allen has better raw arm talent Cam Newton- Newton a better athlete & a more accomplished college player albeit with drastically better surrounding talent.Newton has some intangible issues but also is a far more dominant player Josh Freeman- Comparable in size & situation coming out of a lesser program, Allen is better all around & Freeman played in a spread system.Freeman so so intangibles in the leadership department Joe Flacco- Flacco a more accurate thrower, decision maker & accomplished more at a lower level school than Allen. To be fair Delaware is a subdivision powerhouse.Allen does have better raw tools in terms of athleticism & arm strength. Vince Young- Young a much better athlete & more accomplished player coming in. Allen played in a much more sophisticated system is an inch taller & has superior throwing ability. Jason Campbell- Much more accomplished comiing in. Similar athleticism Campbell better accuracy. Allen has far superior arm strength & is an inch taller. Ben Roethlisbeger- Similar in alot of ways. Roethlisberger had better stats coming in. Roethlisberger alot more accurate, tougher to bring down. Allen is an inch taller & again has a better arm.Have to mention Ben's iffy off the field & intangibles Carson Palmer- Very Similar.Palmer far more accomplished. Allen a better athlete but Palmer not far off. Palmer was more accurate but he didn't exactly throw into windows at USC. Allen a better arm & played w. drastically less. Byron Leftwich- Comparable Athleticism, Leftwich far more accomplished with similar surrounding casts. Leftwich more accurate but Allen has more arm strength
I believe Jamarcus russel was. Big man with a big arm and shit the bed But anyway I kind of like Allen so if we take him I pray he is not a bust
Russel was nowhere near as athletic b.c he had a weight problem & an intangible problem. All stemming from his affinity for purple Drank. He also played on a loaded team in college & piggy backed to the top of the draft after his national title game performance. To be fair he did accomplish much more, had better stats & played in a pro style system.
When I think NFL QB prototype I think of Carson Palmer. I don't think Josh Allen is going to be on a future bust list either. The Jets will bring him along slowly and he'll have a nice career here
There have been several who had similar size and strong arms, but not the cannon that Allan has or the athleticism that he has. Here are some possibilities Ryan Leaf (taken 2nd) 6'5". 235 Jason Campbell? (taken 25th in the 1st round) Matt Leinert (taken 10th) 6'5,225 (had a weak arm however) Byron Leftwich (taken 7th) 6'5, 241 Mark Malone? (taken 28th) 6'4", 223 Brady Quinn? (taken 22nd) 6'4", 232 Kyle Boller? (taken 19th) 6'3", 234 Jeff George? (taken 1st) 6'4", 214 Dan McGwire (taken 16th) 6'8", 240 Strong arm, but not athletic
Thats what I meant,,,I put up my post then I went back and reread all of them and saw him #1 on your list,,,,Im a jooch lol
the real answer is a "Josh Allen" type player wouldn't get drafted in the first round in past history. I mean we have our very own Josh McCown, I would say just as athletic as Allen. Obviously not as tall as Allen, pretty great arm in his own right.
Agreed. Guys with this level of accuracy usually get draft later (or not at all), not in rd. 1. I could see Allen having a similar career: Jay Cutler Geoff George Or maybe Ryan Mallet...
Jeff George didn't have accuracy issues. He had the best arm I've ever seen, and he threw the tightest, most consistent spiral I've ever seen. He could throw a football through a brick wall and still hit a grasshopper 90 yards down field. He had attitude issues and decision making issues. His talent spoiled him into thinking he was entitled to completions, touchdowns, wins, money, and the ability to do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted.
