Report: Lions looking at Atogwe, but is price too high?
Posted: June 3rd, 2010 | Frank Tadych | Tags: Detroit Lions, O.J. Atogwe, Oshiomogho Atogwe, St. Louis Rams, Washington Redskins

Now that Ben Roethlisberger has spoken, we can get back to Thursday’s Oshiomogho Atogwe Watch.

For now, the only public chatter on Atogwe has mostly been teams saying they’re not interested in the veteran safety. One of the most obvious fits all along has appeared to be in Detroit, where the Lions have an open competition to start opposite Louis Delmas. The Lions have shown a willingness to add pieces to the defense, bringing in starters Kyle Vanden Bosch, Corey Williams and Ndamukong Suh, along with a slew of defensive backs.

The Lions are taking a hard look at Atogwe, according to Tom Kowalski of mlive.com, but they won’t make a big push to sign him because of his high salary demands.

The other recent report is out of Washington, where Mike Shanahan didn’t tip his hand about Atogwe after Wednesday’s organized team activity, according to Rick Maese of The Washington Post. And Shanahan brings up an astute (and obvious) point that we’ve made.

“Well, even if I did [have interest], I wouldn’t share that with you, for obvious reasons,” Shanahan said. “But we’re always interested to upgrade our football team, and if it helped us with the right situation and the price is right and somebody’s available, we’re always going to look into it.”

As for the other teams penciled in as possible suitors, we learned Wednesday the Vikings won’t pursue Atogwe and the Cowboys denied interest, joining the 49ers and Eagles, who also don’t appear to be fits.

That leaves the Dolphins and Rams — Atogwe’s former team — still on the radar for now.

This would be a great addition for the Lions. The Lions are a team on the rise. I would not be surprised to see them at 8-8 or better this year.

If they get him, Matt Millen would be doing a good job of putting a good team out on the field this year.

    Hahahaha.

What's even better is that he wouldn't be going to the Phins....

Agreed, he and Delmas would make a very nice combo.

Speaking of the Lions' safeties, does anyone know how Caleb Campbell is doing?
