thats not what you want anyone coming out and saying about management. this type of stuff is bad for business. it seems like its been 4 years since we havent had someone basically say the fo screwed them or is screwing them.

we rewarded rhodes and thomas, who haven't made pro bowls - but we can't take care of a pro bowler?

If the players don't respect the organization, it makes it tough for them to fight that much harder.

leon will get his deal. in regards to Rhodes/Thomas getting new deals early.... Thomas should never ever ever have been given that deal. Everybody and their grandmother around here thought that Rhodes was going to explode last season and have that pro-bowl year.

I still think leon will get paid, just as long as his delusions of grandeur (making 6+ million a season) come down to reality to 4-5 that he has justified....

the question is does a guy get annoyed enough to want to test free agency simply because he was wronged in negotiations?

It doesn't matter in that regard. We control his rights for 3 more years if we want to. It matters for the reason stated in your first post.

Fuck. Just pay the guy. He's worth it. I really don't see the big hold up with Pennington's money coming off the books shortly.

Either way though, we will have him for another year... we could always franchise him after this season.

If the reports are true and LW and Keels are sticking to $6M/yr then he is going to be disappointed for quite some time. Give Tanny some credit for knowing what he's doing by not wanting to overpay here. Don't get me wrong, Leon needs to get a contract with a raise but I'm with the majority who thinks that $4M/yr is the ballpark figure.

There is no way he should get 6M a yea. He doesn't deserve that. I heard they were closing in at around 4.5, but if that isn't the case then, we have 2 more years of Leon and we can move on from there. What is annoying me is the fact that he's under contract that he signed and still complaining to the press. Shut the hell up get things done quietly and it probably gets done quicker...A vocal athlete crying about how many millions he should get is not going to get good play in this economy.

    Ouch.
Although $6m is alot of cash , I think it would still be worth it in the long run and would be far happier to have a happy Leon running his tail off than one that is unhappy.
Complaining to the press makes it sound like HE went to THEM, which hasn't been the case, he was simply interviewed.
    Another contract mess..........again.

Leon is as valuable to the Jets as Maurice Jones-Drew is to the Jags, and more valuable than Darren Sproles period; the market calls for him to be compensated, as such, and $6 million is about right.

The sticking point still remains the possible uncapped season next year. Didn't Wayne Chrebet have a year left on his contract before the Jets broke the bank for him?

And by the way, Jones-Drew got his money from a broke organization that has routine blackouts every season, so it's not like the money is not in the coffers!

I love Leon but the statment below just irritates and just shows how athletes don't get it. He is talking about how he can't afford to holdout b/c of the fines.

Sorry that you are "only" making $535,000 this year. I hope your food stamp shipment came in so you can feed your family.

I understand the point he is trying to make but spare us w/ the "only $535,000 this year" BS. That's probably at least 5x what the average Jet fan makes.

$6m is not the big #, the big # is the guaranteed money. I'm not sure what hew anst but that is bigger than the annual salary.

All teams operate w/ the same cap, it's not about whether the Jets have the money it's about the cap.

They need to get a deal done for Washington. This is ridiculous. I know RB and KR are fairly easy Spots to fill, but when you have a playmaker like Washington, you take care of him.

    Get this done, Mike T.

6 mill is a bit high. I want to see him on the field more, and prove that he's not just a ST stand out. If he can prove this year that he can really get his time in, and still be productive, then 6M isn't all that unreasonable.

But I tend to agree with junc and the complaining about half a mill. Half a mill isn't much by NFL standards, but publicly complaining about it in such hard economic times for the fan base is just a little tacky.

You answered your own complaint. He can't hold out because $15k a day in fines means a contract that would dissipate in just over 30 days. He's saying he doesn't make enough to weather the entirety of camp if a deal can't be reached. I could understand complaining if he had said "How can I be expected to live on only $535,000", but in the context he used it, I really think you're reaching for a reason to be upset.

I agree, I think he used it in this context, and another point is that most live according to their lifestyle. Now I'm not saying it's an automatic right of passage to live extravagently once you make hundreds of thousands of dollars, but let's assume that Leon has made a life for himself and/or family that includes paying his bills that requires the kind of money he's currently making.... it would be irresponsible to get fined, lose money, and start establishing bad credit, lapsed bills, change/decrease in life style.... one question I do have is, are negotiations continuing , or have talks broken off?
