Last minute notice on breaking camp (Dave Hutchinson) http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2008/08/new_york_jets_cheat_fans_of_fi.html Overreaction or deserved?
I love the posts under the article. All of them thought he was an ass for writing it as I do. It just seems the press looks for any reason to put down the Jet originization or its fans. I don't get it. Posted by nightsbaby on 08/20/08 at 11:12AM Buy a ticket it you want to see Favre so bad. Inappropriate? Alert us. Post a commentPosted by brucetheboss on 08/20/08 at 11:29AM Seriously what is your vendetta against this club- they cheat the fans? You're a joke. People get in for free. They have no obligation to tell anyone what their plans are. Real fans know that Mangini is a very quiet, secret coach. Ever heard of making a decision on the fly? This is reporting at its ABSOLUTE finest. Nicely done. Inappropriate? Alert us. Post a commentPosted by Source on 08/20/08 at 11:30AM Maybe this will spur those drunken mouth-breathers to go find jobs now. Stop sniffing jocks and fawning over grown men, you Miller Lite-bloated knuckle-draggers! Inappropriate? Alert us. Post a commentPosted by scrappacito on 08/20/08 at 11:33AM " Why not let the fans -- many of whom travel great distances -- know last week that today was the final day so they could've made plans to come to Hofstra to see Favre up close and personal? Also, the team is moving to Florham Park on Sept. 2nd after a 40-year stint at Hofstra. Why wouldn't the organization have some sort of Fan Appreciation Day? Instead, the Jets try to steal out of town like the Colts did when they left Baltimore several decades ago. They only thing missing from this shameful move by the Jets are the Mayflower Moving Vans." Mr Hutchinson, With all due respect to your position as a sports reporter for the SL, you are an idiot for penning these 2 paragraphs. Have a nice day. Inappropriate? Alert us. Post a commentPosted by jim235045 on 08/20/08 at 11:45AM Dave, Are u mad that your source about the Jets getting favre was wrong?? The Jets dont have an obligation to let fans know when they are closing camp to public...I must say u seem little mad at the Jets right now for other reasons.... Inappropriate? Alert us. Post a commentPosted by SeaKoozMat on 08/20/08 at 12:19PM Silly article. The Jets have had their camp practice schedule posted on their website for all to see. Most teams break camp just before the 2nd preseason game. All along the Jets had no practices scheduled on the website after last week so it was reasonable to assume that last week was the traditional end of camp. Then they just added the three practices this week at the end of last week which was probably to give the fans some more opportunities to come out. Is this reporter a Giants fan a little jealous of the publicity? Which would also be silly. Inappropriate? Alert us. Post a comment
I normally like Hutch's stuff as far as these beat writers go, but this is totally over the top. Sure, maybe some advance notice would be nice, but it is far from cheating fans. And comparing it to the Colts leaving Baltimore is completely overblown. My guess was he was jacked up on Mtn Dew and Peter King articles before penning this one.
Teams often break camp earlier than scheduled. The decision was most likely only made in the last day or so. To compare this to the Colts slinking away in the middle of the night is laughable.
Maybe we should give these guys a break. Here they were all geared up to spew nonsensical QB competition crap all preseason, and the Jets went and disappointed them by picking up a future HoF QB. We might actually start winning some games. Now what are they going to bitch about?
They're business is winning football games, and that know that's the only way to really satisfy fans.
Lately, Hutchinson has been teetering from shill writer to the side of Cimini and Can'o'lardo. Can't say I really care, though.
I'll play the devil's advocate and defend the article. I think Hutch has a point about how long the Jets have been on LI and about a "Fan Appreciation Day." That is not something that would have been insurmountable for the Jets organization to have hosted or for Mr. Johnson to have financially sponsored. Also, as a NJ guy who has attended TCs at Hofstra, the commute has never been easy and fitting in the time to do it hasn't been easy either. This was sometimes aggrevated by not knowing about cancellations or time changes until the last minute. Being that this is the last day of camp on Long Island, it would have been nice for the Jets to figure that out well in advance and let people know, so that they could make plans ahead of time to attend the last day of camp. A Fan Appreciation Day would have been someting real nice... free food... some Jets giveaways (maybe a TC T-shirt)... autograph sessions... perhaps a guest speaker... Joe Willie or Wes Walker or perhaps a whole host of ex-Jets there signing autographs and talking to the crowd about Jets history and what it meant to be at Hofstra all those years, whatever. I just think that 40 years in one place and having your fan base there for so long somehow entitles those LI'ers to something other than, "See ya!"
So what? Bandwagon fans need attention now? If this offends anyone sorry but the cheesehead hat belongs to GREEN BAY! Has nothing to do with Favre now or the JETS. Camp was probably closed due to too many "fans" going through a fan identity crisis. Plus they already announced that every year they will hold the Green & White game in Long Island. There's your fan appreciation. It's okay to miss them. Now go support your team!
Does anyone know if they will have a merchandise sale after camp breaks to unload the remaining gear? I wanted to get to camp this year but didn't have the chance, and as an Islander would've liked to have picked up the "Last year on LI" T-shirt. No such shirt is available on the Modells website.
Koz, I don't remember seeing any "Last Year" T-shirts but they did have a lot of the "40 Years on LI" T-shirts. Maybe that's the one you're thinking of? It's got a map of LI on it. Anyway, that one is available online... it's grey with a green logo. BTW, you're the guy who gave me my first set of directions to Hofstra several years ago. Thanks again... had a great time out there over the last several years.
The Jet website has had the training camp schedule online all summer.....Hutch also said we had NO CHANCE of getting Farve....
wow it's been that long since I gave you those directions? Glad to hear that they worked out so well! Thanks I found the shirt on their site, have to pick up one for myself.
