http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/1044/rookie-report-kyle-wilson-starter Rex Ryan suggested Monday that rookie CB Kyle Wilson will start the pre-season opener Monday night against the New York Giants. Wilson, the New York Jets' No. 1 pick, was elevated to the first team for last Saturday night's Green and White scrimmage. On Monday morning, he once again worked with the starters. One of the cornerback spots is unsettled because, in case you haven't heard, All-Pro Darrelle Revis is holding out of camp, demaning a new contract. Initially, the Jets put Dwight Lowery in the lineup, but -- in a weird twist -- Lowery told secondary coach Dennis Thurman that it would be better for Wilson (and the team) if the rookie received the starter's share of the reps. Hence, Wilson and Antonio Cromartie are the cornerback tandem. "Some people, when they're with the 2s, play like a 2," Thurman said. "When they're with the 3s, they play like a 3. We wanted to give (Wilson) the opportunity to play with the 1s and see what would happen. He held his own, and that's what we expected. In reality, we expect he's going to play well. He's surrounded by other excellent players." Wilson (29th overall) has "rare ability," according to Rex Ryan. His burst to the ball is obvious. He also has a smooth hip-turn, vital for a cornerback, and tremendous footwork. At times, he seems a little indecisive, especially in zone. But that's going to happen with rookies. Initially, Wilson was projected as the starting nickel back, covering the slot receiver. That's a difficult position to master, especially for someone unfamiliar with the role. Now he's trying to learn a different spot in the defense, which means there's a lot on his plate. Too much? Thurman doesn't think so. "Hey, there's peer pressure," Thurman said. "He's got to step into that huddle and get the job done. Our anticipation is that he'll be where he needs to be when it's time to play.
Best of luck, Kyle. Hopefully he can be what the defense needs from its starters right now. I would have loved to see him stay as the #3 this year and learn. He's in for a workout this season.
Good job Kyle. Very excited to have you on our team. Revis being a real pain in the ass at this point too. Everyone else in his situation shows up but he's going to screw us. Keep up the good work Kyle.
Good move by Lowery letting the younger guy get valuable reps. It was probably going to happen either way but it was still classy by Dwight.
I hope to god he has a dominant season, we win a SB, Kdub gets a ring while Revis sits on his couch. Only of course if Darrelle does not come back.
Yeah Lowery tipping his hat to Wilson is a real class act You really have to appreciate the way these teammates acknowledge the tallents of each other and just want to contribute the best way possible, like Richardson mentoring Conner
glad to hear KW is getting his shot....it's too bad Revis wasn't around to give Kyle advice on the field and help him improve his game....
Hopefully Lowery has soaked up knowledge from "the person who's name i am sick of hearing about" and has passed some on to Kyle. Best of luck to Kyle, AND THE ENTIRE TEAM. Kick the shit out of the Giants, please.
Probably not. He's got a lot to learn as a rookie so Rex should be giving him as many reps as he can handle.
Is Wilson that good that its obvious he is waaaaay better than Lowery or is Lowery just a wussy who refuses to fight for playing time?
Lowery wants Wilson to get 1st team reps to get more experience and accelerate his growth as a CB. If it was during the season I bet Lowery would have kept his mouth shut and let Rex make the decision. It probably would have been Wilson anyway, but it was really to let him learn.
Lowery is clearly not a #1 or #2 corner and he knows it. Why take reps away from a guy who is and who needs them? I think it was a classy move.
^ agreed and I havent heard any inside word yet just what rex has mentioned in his press conferences, but we'll all get the inside info come wednesday when hard knocks airs
I really hope they filmed him knocking the wind out of three LBs in practice. Have they said what caused Basped's injury? Was it 5'11" with no neck and a deep hatred for Eric Norwood for at least one play in college?
