The Patriots have made a surprising move at quarterback today, informing backup Kevin O'Connell that he has been waived, according to a league source.

O'Connell, a third-round draft choice in 2008, was considered the leading candidate to be the team's top backup to Tom Brady entering training camp. O'Connell struggled in the team's preseason win over the Redskins on Friday, throwing two interceptions.

In addition to Brady, the team now has five-year veteran Andrew Walter and rookie free agent Brian Hoyer on the roster at quarterback.

That's surprising. I'd have assumed they'd give him more than just one season. He and Josh Johnson were both seen as developmental QBs out of SDSU and USD, respectively. He should find his way onto another team before long.

No no. NYJ2K09 says he blows. His NFL career is therefore done.

Haha no I just felt Andew Walter would end up being the back up in New England. He will make some other team's roster or atleast practice squad.

I didn't get drafting him at the time but obviously because of their drafting history with qbs gave them the benefit of the doubt. They must be really down on this guy...third round pick and I thought the book on him was generally that he was raw but has huge upside. They must have become really disillusioned with him to have given up on him this quick.

When he was drafted, there was so much Patriot cock-sucking. "Oh, he'll be the next Tom Brady! Belichick knows what he's doing, another awesome draft for the Pats!" Heh.

I think he got passed by the cheaper Hoyer and they figured they only need 1 developmental Qb behind brady and 1 vet.

Bingo.... outside of hitting a HR in Brady they haven't really drafted that many stars.

Seymour, Matt Light and Asante Samuel are a very rare group that outside of Brady are the only guys chicken has drafted that have been selected for multiple PBs. Granted they aren't the end all tell all but I think it's a pretty good measuring stick on how well somebody drafts. He has about 8 guys outside of Brady make a PB but a majority of them are one timers. Considering this was his 10th draft with the Pats those numbers aren't really staggering.

Totally unlike the Jets fans cock-sucking about the great move up to take Gholston...

All fans want to believe their organizations make the right choices always... None do.

Maybe Thigpen is coming to NE....

The trash only flows one way from NE to KC. I doubt Thigpen gets cut to make room for another Patriots castoff, although between Thigpen, Gutierrez, and Croyle, someone's got to go. My money's on Gutierrez.

The Pats have made mistakes no doubt, but they seem to be good at picking OL and DL. Not very good with WR's and DB's. Don't draft many LB's high, but hit a HR with Mayo.

    Koppen, Light, Mankins, Neal (FA)
    Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, Green...

...and the kids they drafted at those spots this year look promising, Vollmer and Brace

Guttierez back as the #3 wouldn't be too surprising. Hey, maybe they have Vinny on the speed dial. LOL
