For this 4 rd exercise I decided to focus on what the Jets have said and done and take it at face value. I am using the PFF simulator here and I know how they feel about a few players so I used it to my advantage just as a normal draft room would. Hutch was the only player I valued at #4 and when he didn’t drop, I accepted a trade with NO for 16 and 19. At 10, I took the trade back again. I took 20 and Pittsburgh’s 3rd rd and future picks and gave them back 111 (our 4th) 16. WR Jameson Williams - honestly, the only WR I’d take in the 1st round. We’re building for a dynasty not just a year. 19. OT Bernhard Raimann - He’s raw (only 3 years at the position) with huge upside. After a trade back and him being raw, there’s no brewing controversy in the OTAs. As a former TE, he and Fant can bond. FORTIFY THE TRENCHES 20. DE Jermaine Johnson - I know how the other teams value Johnson and how deep the EDGE class is. I have a backup plan but the board falls how I think it will and I get my DE and BUILD THROUGH THE TRENCHES 35. DE/LB Nik Bonitto - The kid is the same size as Mikah Parsons who is a top LB but showed he could line up on the EDGE. I’m not drafting Nik for his LB play, I’m drafting him to have a dynamic pass rushing rotation. FORTIFY THE TRENCHES 38. DL Travis Jones - We coached him on the pro bowl and liked what we saw. We need a bigger body for the middle who will be here long term. BUILD AND FORTIFY THE TRENCHES 69. C Cole Strange - Big and quick. We made no secret we want a new C. Strange played OG in college but he has taken snaps at C over the years and has shown he’s capable. We drop GVR. Starting 5 plus McDermitt (or LDT), Feeney, and Raimann I don’t see any injury (or even 2) crippling our OL. We’d also have our future RG ready to go when LT moves on someday. BUILD AND FORITFY THE TRENCHES 84. RB Damian Pierce - JD mentioned last year he wanted to take Carter with one of our 3rd rd picks so he’s not opposed to the idea. He takes the running partner Carter needs with the pick we got from Pitt 117. TE Jeremy Ruckert - TE with the most complete game who can develop under 2 pros. Positions not addressed and why not. FS - The position isn’t highly valued by this staff plus they like Trumaine Johnson’s history as a starter enough to sign him to 1yr deals twice. Waiting in the wings is Jason Pinnock who after playing CB his whole love was moved to safety late in the year. Given an off-season to train and a season behind TJ to learn, I don’t see the purpose of drafting a S CB - We like our CB room enough where outside of Gardner, there’s no point in grabbing a CB LB - The CS has said it believes it’s LBs looked bad bc of lack of DT and S help. With more help in the trenches and added DBs who work well against the run I give LBs some help. Full disclosure, if Lloyd had fallen to 19, he’d have been the pick there.
Good effort roach just unrealistic. I don’t see JD trading back twice. I’d bet the house on that. 4th overall I definitely think is possible. JJ won’t be there at 20 zero chance. Williams pick I understand and the Strange pick. Other than that better luck next time.
Haha. Lamarcus Joyner* I guess he isn’t yet engrained in my memory and I pulled out a name I’d rather forget.
Definitely an interesting thought process. I think it’s higher than I’d want to take Bonitto but I understand the potential as a designated pass rusher. I like hitting the trenches hard, and I love Johnson and Jones. Raimann is an interesting guy, and is a good scheme fit, although he had a pretty awful Senior Bowl performance. I do like picking up Strange and Ruckert, and the Jets definitely need to draft another RB.
