The NFL on Tuesday released its list of 26 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Among them was former Jets center Kevin Mawae. He is one of eight players this year to make the semifinalists cut in his first year of eligibility, along with Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Edgerrin James, Ty Law, Orlando Pace, Junior Seau and Kurt Warner.

The nominees list was cut from 113 to 26, and will be trimmed to 15 in early January. The Class of 2015 will be selected Jan. 31.

So what are Mawae's chances of getting in?

He was a three-time first-team All-Pro selection (1999, 2001 and 2008) and eight-time Pro Bowler (1999-2004 and 2008-09). His career spanned 1994-2009, and he spent the heart of it with the Jets (1998-2005).

Mawae was unquestionably among the top centers of his generation. Of the 40 modern-era (non-two way) offensive linemen currently in the Hall of Fame, nine are listed as having played center, and seven are listed exclusively as centers.

The most recent centers to make the Hall of Fame, in terms of when their playing days ended, were Dermontti Dawson (1988-2000) and Mike Webster (1974-90). Dawson was a six-time first-team All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowler, while Webster made first-team All-Pro five times and the Pro Bowl nine times.

Will Mawae's credentials be enough to get him in on his first try?

Feel free to leave your thoughts on his chances down there in the comments.

As you ponder that question, here is the list of the Jets in the Hall of Fame:

    *Weeb Ewbank (1963-73)
    Ronnie Lott (1993-94)
    *Curtis Martin (1998-2005)
    *Don Maynard (1960-72)
    Art Monk (1994)
    *Joe Namath (1965-76)
    Bill Parcells (1997-99)
    *John Riggins (1971-75)

*Considered by the Hall of Fame to have made the major part of his primary contribution for the Jets.

I loved him here. I was one of his biggest fans. I don't think he is a hall of fame player though

    8x pro bowler
3x all-pro including near his final year

16 seasons...He had a stretch of 10 years from 1995-2004 where he played all 16 games every season.

    He's a Hall of Famer.

a few of those pro bowls were reputation based. Idk -I hate talking bad about the guy cause he was one of my favorites. Maybe he's a HOF. If Dermontti Dawson is than I suppose Mawae should be in. I just undervalue centers in general and I never really thought of him as a generational center but maybe he was.

i don't think he'll get in on the first, or maybe even the second year of eligibility, but i do believe he is a HOF player.

he was one of the best Centers playing for a long stretch of his long career, and arguably the best at his position a few of those years.
the most physical and aggressive Center i can remember, he set the tone for the entire line. very multi-dimensional player which can be used as a benchmark of comparison for the position. that's enough to put him in imo..

only thing against him really is the lack of love the HOF voters seem to have for non-stat producing positions (unless they contributed to a championship team)...which is one of my biggest issues with HOF voting.

btw love the pic of Mawae and Martin.
the offense had character, leadership, fire, and a blue collar work ethic largely due to those 2. great Jets..

Great player best at his position for years, broke his right hand and snapped left handed, but alas he was a Jet so he has no chance, see Joe klecko

so you are on board with Mawae being a HOFer but you don't think he's better than Mangold?

It's hard to take one over the other w/ regards to Mawae and Mangold. we have been lucky w/ 2 of the best at that position back to back. I'd rather have 2 QBs back to back like Favre to Rodgers or Manning to Luck but at least we have something.

lol so true. we at least have the Center.
throw in Joe Fields and our history at Center has to be up there with any team (not that i'm well versed on the history of Centers on other teams, but seems a reasonable statement)..

Mawae deserves it but he will most likely have to wait in line behind Will Shields.

Mawae had some herculean seasons. Definitely the best player at his position for a few seasons.

very good to great player for a very long time. Very deserving. I don't think he will get in because of how tough it is, but I'd love to see it happen.

How does Mawae make it further than Klecko ever did? Klecko was a better player. Period.
