hmmmm...he got the lowest comp pay...its good to see him rewarded for overacheiving...but for me i doesnt matter at all what he did last year if he falls into the infamous sophmore slump...lets hope he follows his buddy vilma to a prosperous 2nd year in the NFL..
and coleman didn have half the year this year then he did his rookie year...lets hope he picks it back up... anyone notice the trend...we have a knack of picking up late round talent on the Defensive side...god i wish we could use some of those late round picks on the offense..
He also had a broken hand that he played through that cost him a few picks. Safety is the last of our problems.
Good for Kerry. I think he's very solid as well. On a side note, how in God's name did Curtis DeLoatch get a perfomance bonus from the Giants???
i've sometimes wondered if Coleman's digression was linked to that bonus pay. after he was rewarded with it, i remember Coleman saying it would inspire him to push even harder. i'm sure any player will say something of that ilk, but i sincerely believed it when i heard it. unfortunately, he didn't seem to do so. i think Coleman has talent, but I think he's too slow for FS; thing is, he's not big and not a great tackler, so he won't be a good SS. to compensate for his lack of speed, Coleman needs to digest plays better and take better angles on the ball. hopefully, Mangini can educate him more and scheme to Coleman's abilites. Conversely, Rhodes has a ton of potential. He's got very good height and speed and has a knack for being around the ball (considering he was a rookie R5 pick). i think he's much better suited as FS because of these attributes and I expect him to be the starter. So that leaves Coleman and Maddox as the two possible starters at SS. Obviously, Coleman has the upper hand because of experience. But again, Maddox has better size and is a better tackler than Coleman; however, Maddox isn't very fast, yet he has a lot of potential (i think he was the guy, upon drafting him, Parcells called us abou, praising selection). One of the reasons Maddox dropped in last year's draft is because NC St's front-7 were dominant. therefore, the secondary didn't get much attention. in fact, NC St's Defense was ranked #1 in several categories Maddox's final year; he was a major component of an elite Defense. I'd like to see he and Coleman battle it out in camp. it's hard to believe that Coleman can go from one of best rookies to possibly not even starting in just two years. cheers
maybe. i know there's the "rookie wall" and "sophomore slump," but i really didn't expect Coleman to go from being so promising to so average in one season. i was very high on him his rookie year, but last year he didn't impress at all. i'm also big on speed, and like i said, for a FS, Coleman isn't fast. I'm hoping he continues to work hard and improve; all im saying is, i wouldn't be surprised if he was ousted as the starter. but if you told me this his rookie year, i'd be shocked. cheers
Good for Rhodes...I really like him as an athlete. All he needs is some solid coaching and he could take off.
The guy had a broke hand and played through some other injuries, that doesnt count for anything? Also when you have no passrush it makes the safeties job a lot worse. He is the best DB on the team right now. As far as speed goes lynch wasnt the fastes but is one of the best safties of our time.
i still give Coleman the benefit of the doubt because of his hand and the overall pisspoor D last year. but that doesn't excuse a digression. Vilma continued playing at a high level on a weak D and even weaker front line, which is crucial for him. he didn't have many tackles-for-loss, but he didn't digress like Coleman did. i expect Coleman to perform well this year. if he doesn't, there should be a bit of concern because, going into your third year, you shouldn't digress anymore. it's unfair to underrate him because of what you mentioned, plus having to learn new schemes (including new ones this year), but the expectation level should be raised for him. as far as Lynch goes, valid point. but he compensated for lack of speed with intelligence, good angles, and monster hits -- Coleman doesn't excel at any of those, except I believe Coleman is a smart player; he just needs to play smarter. cheers
I don't understand why everyone loves Coleman so much. Fine he made a few interceptions but that doean't mean he actually covered anyone. Also the performance pay program is not based on stats it's based on number of players you were on the field compared to your salary. Guys who make close to the minimum and get 50+ snaps a game are rewarded for that.
RHodes Deserves it i think how this thing works is the # of starts you have n wut ur salary is .. cuz correct me if im wrong but i remember OT Rob Petitti, Cowboys was always on Parcells DOGHOUSE .. but he started anyways ... so i think its the number or starts VS ur base salary
I really like Erik Coleman but I agree. He hasn't been doing so fantastic and he's more media than anything lately. I really hope he can keep his job and that he can do damned good at it.
Why are the most of you down on Coleman? The whole defense played terrible, and he made 116 tackles. I think this is good for a FS. And I think he would have had more than 2 Int if his hand was healthy. I think he was still one of the best last year in our defense
