This guy had 6 tackles vs. the Browns. He wasn't even a blip on my radar before thursday, but it was hard not to notice him b/c he kept making plays! I know, I know, he was playing against scrubs, but still played well. His bio says he's a rookie out of Wingate, but that's about it. anybody know anything about him? He appears to have zero chance of sticking, but if he continues to impress, may be a PS guy.
I was impressed by his Brown's game too (yeah, yeah against backups, I get it). He's probably PS material, but with Kassell going down you never know. I kind of think Mangini doesn't think he is the answer because as soon as Kassell went down he signed another ILB, Phillips. But I'll be watching next week to see if Cummings gets his shot.
He started in the Green/White game and played well. I didn't know who he was, but I remember noticing a certain #54. That was him
Started this thread after the Browns game, and it didn't get much response, but after another strong game (12 tackles, 9 solo) this kid is starting to intrigue me... Obviously he's not playing against first stringers, but is anyone else really liking what they see from him? We have pretty nice depth at LB, so he remains a long-long-shot, but for an UDFA from Div. II, this kid sure looks like a player to me and is fitting into our Def scheme nicely. Thoughts?
Hempstead, N.Y.----Wingate University senior defensive end Kenwin Cummings (Maxton, N.C.) has reached a free agent contract agreement with the New York Jets, team officials announced this week. The Jets hope Kenwin Cummings will fill a linebacker position with the club. A 6-2, 258 pound graduate of Purnell Swett High School, Cummings was named to the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette NCAA Division II All-America first team in 2005 and 2006 & second team in 2007. In 2007, Cummings led the South Atlantic Conference in quarterback sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (18) in 2007. He recorded 71 tackles during his senior season (fifth on the Wingate charts). As a junior, Cummings led the SAC in tackles for loss (17.5), quarterback hurries (15) and quarterback sacks (nine). He compiled 66 tackles and three forced fumbles in 2006. As a sophomore during the 2005 season, he had 71 tackles, eight sacks, 10 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles and eight QB hurries.
He lookd solid again. I would love to see him get some time against the first stringers and see what he has, but right now he has to considered the back to Harris / Barton. I was also surpised to see Bowen line up so often at DL. If they continue to go that way, Cummings could get significant time.
I thought the same thing. Then Cody Spencer--who I thought was a goner--has a couple of sacks last night and inserts himself back into the mix. Hmmm... (Of course, as a 5th year guy Spencer SHOULD dominate 3rd teamers!)
Plus I think Spencer was playing OLB and Cummings is playing ILB. If one or the other shows the ability to play both it might make the difference. Does any one know if Murrell is an OLB or a DE? He is making a case to make the roster as well.
I think Murrell is an OLB. He has a high uniform number (94) like a DL but so did Bowens (96) and Bryan Thomas (99) who both played OLB last season. His weight was listed as 246 but he looks a lot bigger than that.
Cummings has looked good in the two games, and i was thinking about how and why he flew under my radar at TC. The DL and LBs do their drills on the far side of the field, closer to the VIPs, as those who have been to TC know. The OL, DBs and QBs and WRs drill closer to where most of the fans are. Then, in the scrimmages, the offense goes right to left a lot, and I see a lot of Pace and Gohlston closer to my side of the field. I dont see too much of DeVito on the other sife of the line, though i know he's there, and he also has done a really good job in the games, and especially last night, where he was tough on the point of attack, as another poster has said. I'll try to zero in on Cummings this week. I hope to go Tuesday, and maybe and/or Wednesday. Anyone else i have missed that you want a report on?
