So what if the players the Jets drafted end up being great. When their contracts are up and they want more money the Jets have a history of either trading or releasing them. For example K. Johnson, we had him for three years. He had one year remaining on his contract and the Jets traded him due to him asking for more money. Our center this year was released for cap reasons, who's to say that it won't happen with these guys. This happens a lot, the Jets released a center and then drafted one. Why not pay the experienced pro bowl player and not draft an unproven rookie who might be released for cap reasons in a couple of years.
Mawae was not released for cap reasons. In fact, we saved very little by cutting him, and I believe the main reasons he was cut were age and attitude. I'm willing to bet that Keyshawn's trade was also in large part due to his attitude towards the team.
You have to walk a fine line of keeping emerging stars, while letting the productive but aging vets go while retooling with younger, cheaper studs. The good teams handle this well (i.e Pats, Steelers, etc.)....
well they got plenty of 1st rders for johnson so no matter whos name your trading thats a good deal. as far as mawae goes, he was old, unwilling to take a paycut, i wouldve like to see him stay, but we needed a new C even if mawae was on our roster this yr. we made sure we got coles back only thing i disagree with was letting moss go. although our cap wasnt in much of a condition to keep him at the time i imagine. not sure about any facts but im sure the parcells cap hell was still appearant and the redskins threw TONS of money at him, that given the numbers he put up. was deemed not worth it by the jets FO hindsight is 20/20.......how about making our young players into stars and then focus on keeping them? im not trying to be an asshole and the general point of your post is a good one, if we produce players that definitely contribute and give this franchise a persona we should keep them. yes i agree with that. theres just alot of things to consider.
thats how the NFL is with the salary cap.....no other sport do you see such big names released for money reasons...you have to build the right mix of young guys and stars in their prime and you have a small window(1 or 2 years) to try to win the big one and then its time to re-tool
Dude remove the giant tampon out of you and stop crying like a baby... I haven't seen a post from you where you aren't whining.
Welcome to the Free Agency Era... So basically, we sign all these veteran players (who by the way cost a LOT more than rookies), and hope they take us to the promise land now and have NO future to look forward to...you obviously don't know how things work in the NFL... And by the way...we wouldn't have the cap room to have ALL veteran players on our team...you need to have rookies for depth and to remain under the cap genius
Smokeeater should change there name to something like fueltothefire. It seems everytime Smokeeater starts a thread it is just to grab attention or start a heated debate between the board and themself.
Well the one thing weve got going for us is we dont really have many star players, so it should be easier to hold onto the ones we got. Right now these players are Ferguson, Mangold, and Vilma, Nugent...lets make sure we have em locked up long term
I apologize in advance for this rant, I still hate the fact that we drafted a FREAKIN kicker so high last year. I don't see how you can call Nugent a star. 1) He's a kicker. 2) He's consistant with FG's up to 40 yards, but questionable outside that range. That's about average for an NFL FG kicker. 3) His kickoffs are weak, they don't even go inside the 10 yard line. 4) He's a freakin kicker. 5) He's not a football player, he's a kicker. Ferguson and Mangold are questionable too - they're rookies - I love the picks, but to call them stars right now is IMO a big stretch. Even the best offensive linemen genearlly aren't stars anyway.
Nugent has star potential and proved some of it late last year hitting a ton of FG's... His kickoffs were short for two reasons... A. His leg needs more strength (which he said he would work on) B. Some of those really short kicks were "directional kicks" which means he was kicking them short on purpose. It makes it harder for the return team to set up their blocks... You need to realize that Nugent did REALLY well for a rookie kicker. If you look at his stats compared to most rookie kickers, he trumps them all. Kickers are a very underrated part of the team and I hate it when people say "they are freakin kickers"...it sounds so immature. Kickers can be a huge part of a teams success... I hardly doubt you will see a New England Patriot fan say..."they are freakin kickers"
Whoa, slow down there..... Keyshawn was cut because of his attitude, but also because the FO felt that the money he was asking for could have been spent better elsewhere. The draft picks we got for him helped us land Penny, Ellis and Abe. We still have Penny and Ellis and we, basically, got Mangold for Abe. So, our Center for the next ten years was brought to us with Keyshawn's money and the draft picks we got for him. Mawae was let go because he copped and attitude about his contract before Mangini even spoke with him. It was that and his age. Cap had nothing to do with it.
Teams have to let go of star veterans all the time, it's the way of the cap. We only consider it something abnormal when it happens to us but it happens all over the league. Anyway, Tannenabum & Mangini seems dedicated to keeping the cap in order. I think they'll be on top of things as far as keeping our key guys.
Call him what you want, hes one of our 4 high profile players that needs to be locked up for a long time
I agree he had a great rookie season for a kicker when you look at his percentages of FG's made. He didn't have a great percentage with long FG's though, and hopefully his leg strength does improve and help this. I also agree that he has a lot of potential. The point of my original response was that I don't think you can call him a star right now. Do I think we should do our best to keep him, yeah probably, unless he's going to cost to much. So there is potential he can improve this. I doubt a high percentage of his kicks were directional kicks, I also don't know how you as a fan know that any of them were directional kicks. I think I remember ONE kickoff into the endzone last year. That's very weak. He NEEDS to improve this badly so that our opponents don't always start with good field position. I remember as well as anyone on here the Doug Brien catastrophy, and certainly understand the importance of a good kicker. Adam Venatieri (sp?) is the exception to the rule, I'll agree that he is a "star". IMO kickers names shouldn't be remembered - that means they're doing there job. Venatieri made so many clutch game winning FG's, including championships, that he became a star. The Pats also let him go because they weren't going to spend THAT much money on a FREAKIN KICKER. (they picked him up from NFLE by the way)
And I take it you're happier than hell that the Jets signed Chad to a $64 million contract only to watch his shoulder self destruct over the course of two seasons? Football, just about like anything in life, is a crapshoot. Not sure why you think having secured the best center in the draft was a worse alternative than keeping a 35-year-old locker room lawyer whose best days were behind him. But then again, I don't often understand your position at all on any topic your raise.
Nugent = weak leg, inaccurate past 40 yards and doesn't get TB's. http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/552599
