Trent just took a vicious shot as he scrambled and attempted to slide. He had to be carted off the field. Devestating injury for the Chiefs who really has no great backups. I'll find out more about the injury later.
Exactly - that has got to be a hefty fine, and maybe even suspension, but that's no comfort to Chiefs fans, who must be going bonkers right about now.
I don't like the double standard in the NFL. Pacman Jones can ram his helmet into Blaylock's while making a tackle and it won't even draw a flag. Yet a play like this where the QB is trying to gain yards, the defensive player lays a hit on him and he's going to get suspended and fined?
Obviously, the league wants to protect the quarterbacks. Green had slid and Geathers popped him. That is illegal. I seriously doubt he'll be suspended.
Green was sliding feet first, which means you can't hit him - period. It's not only that it's a dangerous play, it's that it's a deliberately illegal one. Having said that, I don't expect a suspension, either, just a big fine.
it might be a "dirty" hit, but is an expected hit amongst coaches. Every time a QB slides, defenders go after them. Every slide, every time. The hit on green was brutal, and I hope he recovers, even if he never plays another down in the NFL. But as a kid who played ball, coaches always told us to put a lick on the QB, and make sure he feels it. If Green gets up right after that, theres no fine, but due to the severity, there most likely will be, and its undeserved in my eyes.
I only saw one replay of the hit, but it didn't look that late to me, or especially "dirty". You see guys hitting and/or falling on top of feet first sliding QB's all the time.
it looked like it may have been a little late, but not penalty worthy. Chiefs QB Trent Green conscious after taken off field on stretcher 16:05:28 EDT Sep 10, 2006 Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City quarterback Trent Green was awake and had feeling in his extremities but no memory of laying motionless and being taken from the field on a stretcher Sunday following a hit by Cincinnati's Robert Geathers. A short time after Green was taken through the tunnel to be examined, Chiefs spokesman Bob Moore said the quarterback was awake, had feeling but he could not recall what happened. Green, who started his 80th straight game, went into a feet-first hook slide at the end of a run in the third quarter when Geathers charged in and appeared to hit Green's head or chest with his shoulder. Green's neck snapped back hard into the turf and he lay motionless for a few moments. He then was taken off on a stretcher, with an attendant holding his hands under Green's helmet. There was no penalty on the play.
There's no way all 32 teams teach defenders to hit sliding QBs. The reason? NFL coaches don't like their team getting penalized 15 yards.
was there a penalty on that play? no. watch any time a QB slides, he always faces some contact because the defense gets in there fast enough to put the hit on.
I've seen slides by QBs plenty through the years. When the QB is actually in the act of sliding he is not to be messed with by defenders. I have to see the Green play a few more times to determine if it is a finable offense. Just because the play did not draw a flag does not mean Geathers won't get fined. There will be multiple plays in the league this year where the refs failed to throw a flag, yet Mike Pereira will take a look at the play in the office in New York and determine that the refs erred by not throwing a flag and that someone needs to be fined.
Your talking about two different things now, a fine effects a player, a penalty the team. What im trying to convey is, you do not see flags thrown on that play in the NFL unless its very late, Robert Geathers wasnt very late. The NFL manages to fine alot of guys when there hit knocks out a player (mainly to Safetys). Like i said before, if Green gets up, we aren't even talking about a dirty hit, or a late hit, let alone fines. The fact of the matter is, nothing was wrong with Geathers hit. These plays go unlooked by officals, on and off the field if nobody gets hurt. Its unfortunate, but i don't believe he should be fined.
It's the quarterback. But in this case, Geathers didn't even draw a flag. The QB was sliding. THat's why I have a problem with it. He started his slide. If you're a defensive player, you're trained to pull up if you see him slide. I guess he couldn't, or he didn't want to.
Wow this is horrible. His helmet bent into an egg shape and popped back up. It was one of the hardest knocks I've ever seen. Unlike when Brooks ended Gannons career with a hit, Green was sliding. This is horrible. Forget weeks, or season. I just hope he's alright and can retire intact. His arms were flaring after the hit and it didn't look like he could move at all. Prayers to his family who must be going through hell right now.
Exactly what I was thinking. Now he will automatically get a "re-do" because his starting QB got taken out. It's not because they have a soft defense or terrible management, no, they will suck because Trent Green is injured......
I saw it on replay, and I don't fault the defender much. Green should've taken the slide much earlier than he did.
