We're burying this guy before he's done one thing. At least let's see what he does for his first draft and what type of free agents he can attract. Let's give him a chance.
I thought it was pretty interesting that he was Kevin O'Connell's backup at QB at SDSU before they converted him to WR.
The guy was also in the building for the following picks. Nik Bonnitto - best pass rusher on the defense that led the NFL in sacks. Two defensive touchdowns. Quinn Meinerz - All Pro IOL from Wisconsin Whitewater College. To be fair he did catch some steam that year at the Senior Bowl. Riley Moss - maybe the best slot corner in the league now? Definitely a part of the leagues best secondary. Luke Wattenberg - solid starting center There’s more. And it’s hard to define what these assistants and pro scouts were involved in. But I’m encouraged by this guy. He’s also a football lifer. He’s spent more than half his life involved in football from playing to the front office.
This is just my humble opinion When searching for a new GM, I tend to look at their ability to scout and draft, and the free agents they bring in as to if they have overall success. While there are a multitude of other things I feel that these are the main focus. With that, what teams have seen the most success through the draft: Green Bay, Philly, Baltimore, and Detroit all come to mind as teams that routinely hit on their draft picks year in and year out. I personally would have liked to hire someone from the Green Bay lineage or for that matter Detroit so that Glenn has a working relationship with the new GM already.
I wasn’t even counting guys like Riley Moss who are established stars or Vele or Estime who have promising futures. And the point was still able to be made. Fortunately there’s really only one guy peddling this theory so we shouldn’t even be paying too much attention to it but there’s nothing quite like jets fans overreacting and going to extremes when something is announced. Or I guess in this case not announced at all.
Kind of on the same page…I like to see guys from the teams that are consistently successful…especially in drafting…to me that’s Philly, Baltimore, Green Bay, and I’d add Pitt as well…they haven’t had as much success lately maybe but they are consistently good. I like taking front office guys from those because they’ve seen how to do it. That being said, JD spent time at both Balt and Philly which is why I was so excited and hopeful with him. Problem is, to me, he had the exact right philosophy and strategic vision in how to build a great team…start on both lines, use premium picks on premium positions (QB, OL, Edge, WR, CB…probably in that order), and supplement with free agency. Problem with JD is he had the right strategy but messed up the execution. We all point to Becton over Wirfs, he drafted bad receivers in Moore, Mims, and Corley (maybe?), and he bought the hype on Wilson when there were many of us who pointed out his one year of production at a weaker school in a Covid year where his biggest challenge was coastal Carolina…that was a hype train like no other and he should have known better. But regardless, I know nothing about this Denver guy and that worries me a bit in that he’s kind of an under the radar guy, hasn’t been hyped as the next hotshot GM, so I’m worried that he’ll be more Idzik and Mac than anything else, so I would have preferred a more seasoned guy like Halaby or Borganzi but I will wait and see what he says and does and then we can judge the validity of the hire…
I'd never heard of this guy before today, which is probably a bad sign. But even the football gods surely wouldn't saddle the Jets with two of the worst three GMs of all time, so he has to be some sort of upgrade.
Well, JD was hyped on top of the list for GM candidates, so there is that. May be being under the radar is good.
I don't know much about Mougey, but I do like him better than Brown and Newmark. Looking forward to the Anderson report being false and us hiring Brown or Newmark!
So, first time relatively unknown GM, first time HC formerly a DC, soon to be drafting a QB I’m sure….. Yepppp look kids, Big Ben!! Parliament!!
How many second time GM’s are there in the NFL currently? How many successful second time GM’s have there been in NFL history?
GM is almost always a one shot deal, no second chances I’m guessing Josina is not wrong by the way, Mooge was offered and like Glenn he’s gonna talk it over with family and we wait for his decision. he’s been with the same organization in the same city for a long time and he’s a west coast guy so I imagine it’s not an easy decision one thing I heard, the new Broncos GM worked with him for a year and was impressed enough to make him assistant GM so the broncos wouldn’t lose him
And the very first thing he learns about the Jets organization is that they can't keep their information in-house.
