Five innings, no runs, 3 hits, no walks, 6 K's. His last pitch was a 94 MPH fastball for a strikeout. I don't recall him being at much more than 92 last year. One more rehab start, then he should be up as the 5th starter.
Hey asshat, if you don't care, don't read it. It's not like it was a cryptic title. This is a baseball forum, and I posted about a baseball player, one who is coming back from cancer. Even if you aren't a Red Sox fan, many people might be interested just for the human side of it. I understand you're bitter about the Yankees' play this year, but there's no need to be a prick. BTW, How did that guarantee from the other thread turn out for you?
Hey devil, thanks for posting this. I am one of those people who care about the story from the human side. You know I am no fan of the Sox, but when a guy beats cancer, and makes a successful comeback, that's a good story. Especially when you consider it's in the same year as something like Bonds breaking the all-time home run record. I wish all the best in health to Lester. (Of course I hope he loses a lot when he gets back to the bigs, but only because he's on the Red Sox. Otherwise, I wish him all the best.)
Yet another Sox starter who may very well qualify as the ace of the Yankee staff. Plus, he's a nice kid.
Lester has made it all the way back! He got the callup today and will take Julian Tavarez's spot in the rotation, with the first start being tomorrow.
God bless this kid, cancer is a horrible horrible thing. For him to come back from this so quickly is amazing... I wish him continued success.
great to see him beat cancer....Im not too sure he can pitch at this level, but its a nice story.....slight upgrade I guess over tavarez but julian has had some good starts this year...
I hope Lester pitches well but the pe blows it for him. More than baseball I just hope he's healthy for good.
Lester to make first start since being diagnosed with cancer Associated Press Updated: July 22, 2007, 3:33 PM ET * Comment * Email * Print BOSTON -- Jon Lester is slated to return to the mound for the Boston Red Sox on Monday, nearly a year after his rookie season was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer. Jon Lester Lester Lester was scheduled to replace Julian Tavarez for Monday's game at Cleveland, the 23-year-old left-hander's first major league appearance since he beat the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 23 last year. The Red Sox said nine days later that he had a treatable form of lymphoma. "I don't think it really has sunken in yet, and I don't think it will sink in until tomorrow when I get on the mound," Lester said Sunday. Lester was 7-2 with a 4.76 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 81 1/3 innings last year after being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League in June. "It's definitely a lot more gratifying than last year, just for the simple fact of the road that I've been on coming back from last year," Lester said. After undergoing treatment during the offseason, Lester rejoined the Red Sox during spring training and started the season on the disabled list. He was activated on June 11, but immediately was optioned to the minors. "It's been hard, but you have to sit back and see that they have your best interest involved," Lester said. "It's been hard getting treated like you're in a glass bottle, so it'd be nice to finally break through and get to pitch again." Lester went 4-5 with a 3.61 ERA with Class A Greenville of the South-Atlantic League and Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League, winning three of his last four decisions. Lester was 4-5 with a 3.89 ERA in 14 starts with the PawSox and had a 2.08 ERA in three starts and Greenville. "I can't sit here and tell you there won't be some emotion involved," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "I think his folks are going to be there, which I'm sure for them will be extra special." Francona said the decision to recall Lester made sense from a baseball perspective and wasn't influenced by emotion. "We didn't let it be, or he would have been here three months ago," Francona said. "I wouldn't apologize to be crazy about a kid like Lester -- I'd be crazy not to. But I wouldn't ever let that get in the way of making decisions." Francona said there will be no pitch counts or limitations on Lester, who allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings against Ottawa on Wednesday. Tavarez, 5-8 with a 5.27 ERA in 18 starts, will be switched to a reliever. "He's got a chance to really help our bullpen," Francona said. "He's a guy who can throw whenever you want." Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press Big Mets fan... so I havnt really followed this, but what a great story!!!! very happy for the guy!!!
Exactly. You never want to see ANYONE get cancer. Even if it was a vile Yankee I'd still hope for their recovery. Your hope for the pen blowing it is probably a pipe dream though, since the Sox have the best bullpen in the AL, and second only to San Diego in the NL. Of course, now that I say that, they'll blow it. EDIT: Now that I look, after yesterday they passed San Diego, so they have the best bullpen in baseball.
Bingo. I'm happy for the guy beating the big C. You never want to hear that. Hell, I wouldn't even wish that on Bonds.
meh on days like this I can't see how you wouldn't want him to get a win on first game back. I was even rooting for David Cone to get a W when he returned.
Because we want to make the playoffs. Actually, it doesn't matter to me whether he wins or not. The Yankees need to worry about winning. Other teams can win or lose as it comes, but without us getting our own wins, it doesn't matter what everyone else does. But I'd still never root for Boston, unless they were in last place, and playing the second place team who was within a game of the Yankees. Then, maybe.
