Ive wanted to update my mock a bit with all of the talent emerging in college football as well as talent falling off the boards. So here we go. My opinion of the Jets biggest needs in order. 1. 3-4 DE 2. 3-4 OLB 3. NT 4. WR 5. Safety 6. OL Depth As you should no the Jets have the following picks ( 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, & 7) 1. Allen Bailey , 3-4 DE, The U. Bailey has a ton of talent and has become a more consistent player this year. He is doing a better job of getting off blocks and using his hands. He measures up at 6'5 288 Lbs perfect size for a shifty yet impact player to throw on the D-Line. Allen is young, incredibility athletic, and has potential to be a great 5 tech 3-4 DE. 2. Aldon Smith , 3-4 OLB, Mizzou Rex is licking his chops over this pick! Aldon Smith is a very young but very VERY talented 3-4 OLB prospect and is exactly what the Jets need. He is a relentless pass rusher who uses his superb athleticism and long arms and reach to outman opposing linemen this year Aldon is continuing to work on his technique to become even more disruptive to opponents . 4. Matt Reynolds, RT, BYU Jets are in need of a true RT prospect and some depth for our aging OLine. Reynolds played LT at BYU but will have no problem converting to the right side. He has one thing that the Oline definitely needs size and exceptional skills at pass blocking, Sanchez will thank Tanny in the future for picking this kid. 5. Anthony Gray, NT, Southern Miss Yes I know " This is WAY to late for a NT". To be honest after the first 2 rounds there is a huge drop off in true NT's . Gray at this point in the draft would be a steal in the 5th so will see what happens. At 6'0 317 his height may be an issue but there is no doubt this kid has a heavy motor and if groomed well in 2-3 years can definitely be our starting NT. 6. Cecil Shorts III, WR, Mount Union A big WR with solid speed, Cecil can be a consistent bench WR who can come in and make some surprising and solid catches. In my opinion he is a definite sleeper and in the 6th round can provide solid production. He falls this low because of the school he played at but had excellent numbers ( 90 catches, 1,551 yards and 17 scores. ) He can also play well in special teams. IMO easily can be a productive 3 or 4th WR. ( Video is of 2009 season) 7. Chris Culliver, FS,KR,CB,WR , South Carolina A truly smart and vocal kid, Culliver has been all over the field at South Carolina , he can catch , run, play defense , and return the ball. Hes definitely a kid that can come in handy on each side of the ball. He's had some problems with suspensions and injuries but if he dropped to the Jets in the 7th he'd be yet another exciting prospect. Thank you in advance! Please comment and I am open to any constructive criticism.
I really like that posters like yourself are keeping this forum alive, but this mock is a little ridiculous. The Allen Bailey pick makes sense. That's a definite possibility. ...but: Aldon Smith is a big time prospect. I highly doubt he'll leave as a redshirt sophomore if receives a late second round grade. Matt Reynolds is also a very good tackle prospect. As of right now, there's no way he'll fall to the fourth. Things could change though. Anthony Gray is a better prospect than most people seem to think. I think he'll be a late second to early third rounder. Like I said earlier though, things change. We have a long ways to go until draft time. Shorts is definitely productive and I'm sure he'll get a lot of looks because of Pierre Garcon's success in the NFL. I see no problems with drafting a small-school project wideout in the later rounds. Chris Culliver has been a huge disappointment at South Carolina this year, but his measurables will get him drafted in the middle rounds. He'll run a great 40 and put up very good numbers in a lot of the drills. As for your team needs: I agree for the most part. Running back is a bigger concern than a lot seem to think.
I can see all the points you have addressed and I do agree Smith coming out early is a stretch but I honestly feel that with the threat of there being a rookie cap in 2012 I think it would drive Smith to come out early, and with his youth and lack of experience it would drop him to where the Jets could be. Just my opinion though. Also , after last years draft with people thinking Cam Thomas and others would be locks in the second or third and dropping all the way to the 5th and 6th rounds I honestly can say that players like Gray and Reynolds positions could fall similar to players like last year. Again just my opinion. I wanted to a dress the RB position to be honest, but my feeling is Greene gets better later this year , LT comes back again, and we adress RB early in the draft in the 2012 season. But I wouldn't be surprised if we pick a RB in the 2 nd or 4th if a prospect is there we cannot pass up.
I agree with everything you say and would love Allen Bailey with our 1st rounder. I dont really think we need a WR and would much rather draft a RB there unless the coaching staff is high on McKnight. Reynolds even though I dont think we looks like a traditional linemen will be drafted around the 2nd round.
It's hard to make these drafts without knowing who will be back and who won't to be honest. Wr could go from a small need to a major need and the same can happen for the RB position. But for what i think can help our team in the future and who fits the best with our team, I'd say this draft I created fits that criteria. Some players might be out of draft position yes, but to be honest we ultimately don't know till draft day as hard as we try. Look at the example I gave with Cam Thomas or even a guy like Ricky Sapp who we all thought would be locks at mid second early third at the least and ended up drafted in the 5th round.
My issues are with Aldon Smith and Matt Reynolds. If Smith comes out his potential makes him a first rounder, and like Mr E said if they projected anything different he wouldn't come out. I get the pick cap and everything, but late 2nd this year vs. potentially top 15 with the pick cap still benefits the latter. And for Matt Reynolds, he's a Junior. There's not a ton of buzz around him, and even though he'd be an ideal RT, I can't imagine he'd go pro of teams aren't giving him any love. I also think he's a much better player than the 4th round, but that's just my opinion.
I kinda like what I'm seeing I don't know about Smith declaring but you can never have to many pass rushers. Like seeing Bailey in a Jets uniform, especially if our coaching staff can tap into his potential which is off the charts I would say I would kind of like to take a safety early, I just think that our defense could take a step to a whole new level if we get a real play maker at safety. I love Leonhard but he isnt a dynamic safety which I think we could use
Would LOVE this draft but to be honest it would be more like , Aldon Smith in the first and BPA in the second.
