Sorry. I just threw this together in a post Holmes trade frenzy. It's just to show to possible directions we can go. I'll admit, up front, the players being selected in these positions are a little optimistic. No Trades- 1) Odrick- Easy pick if there. 2)Chris Cook V-Could play FS or CB 4) Mike Johnson-g-Alabama(good run blocking guard) 6)Andre Dixon- RB UConn.(will probably go a round or 2 earlier, but you never know) 7)Clint Gresham-Best rated Long Snapper coming out this year. Dearth has become a problem. Trades- We trade Leon to SF for a third rounder#79 and trade#29 to Wash for #37 and #103. Leaves us with #'s 37,61,79,89,103 and our 6th and 7th. Five picks in the top 103 is pretty tempting. Now with some picks. #37- Linval Joseph #61- Cam Thomas(if he gets past Miami) #79- Chris Cook #89 Jacoby Ford-(special teams) #103 Anthony Dixon -RB 6th rounder Kevin Haslem Rutgers( RT) 7th Clint Gresham. I know there are flaws, but have at it anyway.
Love the first 2 picks like the next 2 dont know the last 3 edit this is the feelings for the trade one. The non trade one don't think Odrick will be there for our pick.
Odrick and Cook would be 2 terricfic picks....but IMO, will be long gone. Joesph and Thomas are great....I don't want both, one or the other.
Really why not you'd have a new DE this year and potential replacement for Ellis or Jenkins waiting in the wings. We'd go from DL depth being nothing to being a strength.
I have no issue with the Jets going DE/NT with one of the 1st 2 picks..not both. Joesph can line-up at NT and DE and be very versatile in Rex's defense. Joesph and Cam Thomas ..1 & 2 is too much. OLB, S or RB, like McCluster, would be good late Rd 2 optons. I've tried to explain Rex puts alot of emphasis on the Secondary in most of his defenses. We do need to get youth on the D-line....2 top picks is insane. I've been critized for not wanting Joesph at #29, I believe he's a slight reach. I do like Joesph's game and the tapes I've seen show he's an incredible talent. Joesph's quickness at his size is off the charts.
I went with the 2 lineman strictly because of value. The question is, by that pick, would you rather have Cam Thomas or the 5th best Safety or 6th CB. Jenkins is coming off a major injury,Ellis is in his 10th year and we don't have a starter on the other side. We can't sign any FA's to fill the spot because of the dopey last 8 rule. Its our best course of action simply because it's where we are the thinnest.
I like the idea of trading down for Joseph, because I don't see anyone falling to us at #29 that would be worth the pick, and most of our top targets will be long gone or still around in the 2nd. I'm pretty new to the ganggreen forum so I can't post a new thread, but here's how I think things could play out: Possible Trades: --Our old friends, the Browns, are in desperate need of both WR and secondary help. If they go with Haden in the 1st, I see them sneaking back into the end of the first round to grab Golden Tate before the likes of St. Louis and Tampa. If they go with Dez Bryant instead, I see them doing the same to grab McCourty or one of the talented corners.-- NYJ GET: #38 overall and #92 overall (a combined 652 points) CLE GET: #29 overall and #198 overall (a combined 652.2 points) --The Panthers, who have virtually no depth at QB, appear willing to let Matt Moore have his chance. With 3 6th round picks though, I could see them sending one of them our way to add Kellen Clemens to their mediocre stable of quarterbacks. CAR GET: Kellen Clemens NYJ GET: 175 overall leaves us with picks 38, 61, 92, 124, 175, and 236. 38-Linval Joseph, East Carolina, DL, freak athlete, versatile enough to play anywhere on the D-Line.. trading back to 38 puts us one slot ahead of the Raiders, who would probably be one of the most likely candidates to snag Joseph before our 61st pick. 61-Daryl Washington, TCU, OLB, Washington could be gone by this pick, but I think either him or Sapp (the two LBs we brought in for visits) will be around. Washington could provide the speed we're lacking in our LB corps, and is the type of smallish, quick, LB prospect that Rex can turn into a pass-rushing nightmare. 92-Montario Hardesty, Tennessee, RB, with Leon's future in doubt you can never have too many quality running backs. Tanny has been public about his admiration for some of the mid-round running back prospects, especially Hardesty. If Hardesty is gone I wouldn't be surprised to see Gerhart or Tate with this pick. LT only has a year or two left in the tank, and with a run-first offense it would be wise to capitalize on a talented RB class while these guys are still around. 124-Lindsey Witten, UConn, DE, here I think the Jets take advantage of a relatively deep DL class to replenish their front line with some much needed youth. Witten is a terrific athlete and a gifted pass rusher, and many scouts think that he can play OLB if necessary. One of my favorite players at UConn since I've been here. 175- Kevin Haslam, Rutgers, OL, I think that the Jets feel comfortable enough with Slausen and the rest of the O-Line corps to not waste a top pick on depth this year. Next year, O-Line will be a top priority. Haslam came in for a visit and has proven that he is versatile enough to play guard or tackle. 236- Ray Fisher, Indiana, CB/KR- this guy is a recent converter to CB and is a great athlete. He projects as a low risk/high reward guy who could come in and help out on special teams right away, possibly as a return man. This pick could go either way, with either Fisher or Shuler (assuming he'll be around), if either of these guys go undrafted expect to see them signed as UDFAs. let me know what you guys think, sorry to Johnny4 for cramming this in here. just starting posting on here so I couldn't start a new one. Maybe one of the mods could move it to its own thread?
If I get to a computer I'll put that thread up for you. I first proposed a trade down with the Browns in Feb. I changed up the draft partner just to throw a different look. I'm not on the Hardesty bandwagon, I'd take Ben Tate over him. I have a feeling Hrdesty will always be hurt.
I like the mock with the trades, but I don't want Ford at all. Even as a return man. I'd rather find safety depth or CB depth. I agree with WW85, taking two DL in the first picks isn't a great idea, but it would create insane depth and schemes. Ellis/Joseph/Jenkins/Thomas with the 4-3 alignments would be deadly... and unfair.
Taking 2 DL with the first 2 picks isn't unprecedented in Jet history. Worked out pretty well when we took Ellis and Abraham(and when we later turned Abe into Mangold). When it comes to either line, grab talent.
Go on youtube or other sites and see some game tape. If you watch him and then compare him to others at the position, he is just better. add to tht that he is clean cut, smart and a terrific athlete.
