We all know the Jets could always use help at offensive line. The Patriots placed the franchise tag on Joe Thuney. The Patriots and Thuney are nowhere close to a long term deal. The Patriots being in cap hell can not afford to keep Thuney at the 14.78 million franchise tag hit. So they would be willing to trade him. Maybe for a 2nd or 3rd round draft choice. This year's draft is good at Offensive tackles but not so good an interior offensive lineman like Thuney. Thuney was the best OL the Pats had this past year. He is a guard who can substitute at center for emergency purposes. Assuming the Jets could arrange for a long term deal with Thuney, is he worth pursuing? I would argue yes, but many of you will probably argue the Jets should never get an ex Patriot player. In this case, I would say not only would Thuney help shore up the Jets offensive line, but he would also provide great intel on the Patriots.
So you advocate giving up one of our top 4 picks, PLUS commit $14-15 million in salary for an OG? Somewhat tempting, but if I'm Douglas I'm using those 4 picks for" OT, WR x 2, Edge/CB, and saving my cap space for bigger needs.
The Patriots tagged Thuney to block him from the Jets and it worked. Good for them. The Jets have moved on and signed several other offensive guards. Don't think he is an option now.
Thuney is not an option at this point. No cap space to sign him and also maintain some freedom to fill holes this summer/fall. Pats will get a big backlash from their own players when they rescind the tag. Belichik probably outsmarted himself this time.
Wow! Just realized that Thuney signed his tag! Talk about shoving it back in Belichik's face. Now the Pats cannot even rescind the tag.
The 14.78 million is for the franchise tag. If the Jets were to make a long term deal say 3-4 years, then the figure drops probably below 12 million. The question is are you satisfied with the interior of your offensive line? Meaning your two guards and center.
Hes not s $14 mil per player to me, plus we've moved on, big time pass. Draft for development and depth
If Belichik doesn't think he is worth either the tag price or a slightly lower long-term deal who are we to doubt him? I don't think franchise guards exist. Obviously neither does Bill.
THuney was a third round pick; lots of high quality guards come in 3rd and 4th (our own Brandon Moore was UDFA) we have been shell shocked by the last 2 GMs; fingers crossed the new GM can find the next high quality guard in the middle rounds so we don't get tempted to pay huge money
Douglas isn't going to spend big on a guard. You do that and you can't afford to pay your tackles when you find them.
Yep I am. We do not need to waste money on a guard. Douglas being an offensive line guy I think can find someone that can help
So none of you guys think the Jets should overpay for Thuney and help the Pats out of a tight money position at the same time?
12M for past prime OG = waste of money. Pass. If Belicheck somehow pulled this trade, I'd start assuming that the master Cheater somehow pulled a fast on again.
