Heading into the season we have corey davis, mims, crowder, moore, and cole. We are 5 deep and while none are superstars it's a very solid group and moore or mims could emerge as a star. so I went back to look at other good WR groups we've had in the past 20 years or so 2015 - marshall, decker, enunwa, kerley, devin smith. this was an interesting year. we traded for marshall, signed decker, enunwa was looking like a stud ready to emerge, kerley was reliable and a great WR4, and devin smith was a young 2nd rounder. sadly it didn't pan out. kerly got hurt and missed 6 games, enunwa got hurt and never really played much again. devin smith was a bust. our 1-2 was great but we didn't have the depth we expected 2016 - marshall, decker, anderson, enunwa, devin smith it was a carry over form 2015 with our top 2 in tact coming off big years. enunwa was coming back, robby anderson lit up the preseason, and devin smith still had potential. of course it didn't work out. decker went down for the eyar early and marshall missed many games. enunwa had a solid year but again hurt and banged up a lot and robby exploded onto the scene giving us hope for the future. still it wound up being robby and a bunch of scrubs mostly 2002 - we had coles and chrebet and had drafted moss in the 1st (the last time the jets took a WR in the 1st) it was only 3 deep but it was looking like a good group. moss was ok as a rookie, coles wound up leaving in FA and we never had a good WR group for over a decade after this
This potentially can be a good group. But there's a long way to go, especially with a rookie QB. They go hand in hand.
Toon and walker were the best but more recently edwards Holmes cotchery doesn’t even get a mention in the op?
All I know right now is I’m loving that they are approaching the WR position with my preferred strategy… Consistently attack the position in the 2nd round of the draft. It allows you to field a deep corps with diverse talents. -Mims: 6’3”, 215, Size, Speed, Acrobatic, Contested Catch -Moore: 5’9”, 185, Burner, Hands, Elusive, Route Running With two 2nds next year, I might return to see if I can find a guy with another trait combination.
The Decker/Marshall years had a way better top 2 but our current collection of wideouts is the deepest group we've had in a long time.
What stood out about the 2001-02 group was the lack of size. Good WRs - nobody was more clutch than Chrebet but contested balls were a problem. I think the current group with Better coaching and experience has the potential to be very exciting but a lot depends on the rookie QB.
mims and davis on the outside. both bigger guys, then moore, cole and crowder in the slot, plus herndon up the seam. on paper we look pretty good
we never really had big good WRs. keyshawn for a few years before the trade, then kina justin mccariens (thugh he wasn't good) then braylon, then marshall/decker. then robby but he was more speed then size cause he was thin.
Yeah I mean as a general building strategy. I love how the Steelers approach the position, continuously investing 2nd's and the occasional 3rd, and only extending the elite players.
steelers are also really good at drafting WRs. we haven't been that lucky at all. they also have had a FQB since 2004 we also haven't been that lucky
Well other than the one year with a healthy Decker and Marshall one would have to go back to the Toon/Moore days for size (other than Keyshawn). The Mims/Davis size combo stands out to me. With those two out jumping and out wrestling CBs they made the perfect pick with Moore who may be small but runs like a rabbit. Crowder is still around - he’s a player. This has the potential to be a really outstanding crew. It’s been a long time coming .....
Wilson does like to throw up those 50/50 balls. It’s good that we acquired WRs, Moore included, that are really good at contested catches. Whether by coincidence or design, this WR group compliment our QB’s playing style.
