Jets won’t comment about Darrelle Revis contract
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 19, 2012, 5:54 PM EDT

ReutersIn September of 2010, just after Darrelle Revis ended his holdout and signed a new four-year contract with the Jets, we noted that another holdout could be coming after the first two seasons of that deal.

Well, now Revis has played the first two seasons of that deal, and the chatter is beginning: Could Revis be planning to hold out again?

Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum was asked today if he’d be willing to do a new deal with Revis, and he refused to answer.

“Darrelle is under contract,” Tannenbaum said. “Darrelle is obviously a really important part of our team, and we look forward to the 2012 season and hopefully accomplishing a lot of great things together.”

When Tannenbaum was asked to clarify whether the Jets would consider renegotiating Revis’s contract, he wouldn’t get into it.

“I said all I’m going to say about his contract,” Tannenbaum said.

Jets coach Rex Ryan was similarly reserved this week when asked whether there had been any talk of a new deal for Revis.

“I think first off, those conversations would be private, if they actually did take place,” Ryan said. “I think any conversations, if that was the case, they’d take place between Mike and football administration. So that’s what I would say about it.”

After Revis ended his holdout in 2010, he said he was happy that he’d make $32.5 million in the first two years of his front-loaded four-year deal, but that the total of $13.5 million he’s set to make in 2012 and 2013 isn’t enough.

“If I continue to play ball like I usually do, we’ll probably be back at that same position we were this year,” Revis said at the time.

Revis has continued to play ball like he usually does. It remains to be seen whether he’ll demand that the Jets pay him accordingly — and if he does, whether the Jets will give in to his demands as they did two years ago.

File this under 'NY Media cunts have nothing other than Tebow to write about so they try to fabricate a Revis contract controversy.'

By the way, you didn't post a link.

The Jets will have to deal with this after 2012. Anything that happens before that is likely to blow up on Revis in a big way, so he's unlikely to set things in motion this early.

The choice they Jets will have in 2013 is whether to take a one-time hit on the cap of $12 million, when they trade Revis, or pay whatever he's asking and take that cap hit year after year on the new deal. My guess is that the single biggest factor here will be what he's asking.

Can the Jets absorb a $12 million a year hit on the cap through 2016? Probably. Can they absorb a $15 million a year hit? That's the question.

Sure, but a $15m average on the contract doesn't mean a $15m cap hit every year. If they have high base salaries in certain years and not in others they have flexibility to restructure or not as required.

Like I said in another Thread; we need to seriously look at Trading #24 after this season (we will lose leverage with other teams if he holds out; we may have to sign and trade). There is now way we continue to let the CB position handcuff this team

It depends on how much guaranteed money a trading partner is willing to pay for him but we still owe him a lot. Our trade recuperation would be less than ideal because said team will be tying up a lot of resources in acquiring Revis.

My question is, at that point in his career, will he recognize the opportunity to do what a lot of the Super Bowl contenders have done and take less money to field a better overall team?

In all likelihood, we will not win a Lombardi Trophy. It will be up to him to decide if he wants to be a dick and consume the salary cap in a position of questionable value, or help the team and try to win a Super Bowl. He will be infinitely more marketable if he gets a ring. He's already getting sponsor deals.

My guess is no, he will not sacrifice the short term for the team. I like the player and he is probably a good dude, there is no evidence to dispute that. But his support group, from his uncle Sean Gilbert, to Ty Law and his agents all will be clamoring in his ear for the next "most money ever" contract.

It's impossible to trade him today. The cap hit would be in the $17-18 million range.

Next year they're looking as $12 million. He's going to be hard to trade them also so the real question is whether he's harder to keep.

The odds on Revis going for the most money possible with no concern for the team are like 99%. He's held out twice already and he's only been in the NFL for 5 years.

Folding in 2010 screwed the Jets royally. Now the workaround deal makes Revis hard to trade and his demands make him hard to keep. I think it is quite likely that the Jets are just forced to let him hit the market in 2014 with only the standard compensation back.

Obviously the Jets will do everything they can to avoid this situation however Revis demands may force their hand.

He may have some sort of loyalty to the organization whether it be Rex or his fellow players, and/or recognize his opportunities for post NFL life is the best it can be right in New York (isn't he still doing some rap project?). Hell, he may like the idea of being a franchise's GOAT, or the idea of being a legend with one team for his entire career. Maybe we'll be strong contenders at that point so it would be hard for him to leave. Maybe we'll suck and everything will have crumbled.

Chances are, without a doubt, that he likes the idea of money more. But we may be surprised.

I'm not on the fence about us not overpaying him, though. I've seen about all I need to see to convince me a generational player at cornerback is inherently only so valuable.

There's absolutely no reason to discuss his contract right now. Cimini is probably getting paid by Revis' agents to write that shit.

Yeah, this is something to be addressed a year from now.

Having said that, it could be a problem when it's time is at hand.

I say let him holdout.. no other team will trade for him with that contract. Let him sit out for 2 years lets see if he still wants to hold out.

It feels like everyone employed by ESPN is a real dunce nowadays.

This man should definetly change his first name to Ronald because this clown shoes is really clueless.

He'd really be fucking himself if he held out considering he's basically untradeable with that enormous cap number.

If there is one thing Iv learned over the years and especially with Tannenbaum in charge of these kinds of situations, is Nothing is impossible in terms of Contracts and deals. There are teams out their that will blow it all to get a Player Like Revis. Revis may want out for all we know and it wouldn’t surprise me at all. I personally believe Revis is a Me first player and wants to win a super bowl more then be a faithful Player to the Jets ; of course getting insane amounts of money is in the forefront of his decision making. The Jets wont talk about Revis contract because they don’t want to feed into the brewing storm that is coming either this year or next for sure.
