I believe the NFL has the option of waiting until after the games this weekend to decide what game, if any, they will be flexing.

NFL can really flex muscles in Week 17

Posted: News | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Flex scheduling

To those waiting for the NFL to announce its flex scheduling plan for the final week of the regular season, you will have to wait a little longer. Deciding which contest is chosen for the Sunday night prime-time game on NBC normally is done 12 days prior to the game ? meaning today would be the day to learn who will close out the 2008 regular season (there is no Monday night game in Week 17).

However, the flex scheduling rule is, well, flexible for the final week. To ensure the season ends with a meaningful game, the NFL does not have to make the final flex decision until after this Sunday?s games.

If the decision had to be made today, it?s hard to imagine the Week 17 Sunday night game wouldn?t be Dolphins-Jets, with Chad Pennington returning to the Meadowlands for a game that could decide the AFC East title.

But what if both of those teams lose in Week 16, and the Patriots take control of the division? What if Denver fails to clinch the AFC West this week, and the Broncos-Chargers game becomes a winner-take-all?

The other two games of Week 17 that could have huge playoff implications for both teams are Giants at Vikings and Cowboys at Eagles. While those games are in play, keep this in mind: Through the first six weeks of the flex scheduling, five of the six games tabbed for Sunday night were FOX games.

So nothing will be set until after the Week 16 games, but you can probably draw your own conclusions based on those results.

Yet one more way the NFL gives zero consideration to its "loyal ticketholders" around the league.

They give the public lip service that "our fans are very important to us" and that "we value our loyal ticketholders," and then screw you around until the last second. Obviously, the "Pennington Returns To The Meadowlands For Revenge" storyline is just too irresistable to not leave it open as an option, but just long enough to see if there might be another storyline out there that tops it.

And the hell with the ticketholders. All of a sudden their "valued customers" can twist in the freaking wind. What a bunch of bullshit.

Oh c'mon....you're going either way. Just leave the whole day open. Personally, I lucked out because my family will be in Florida and I'll be flying down the day after the game. Even if this wasn't the case though, I'd be going no matter what. The game has classic written all over it. You would hope not (that we would blow them out)...but we're J!E!T!S! fans and we know better. It'll probably come down to the final play, AND it will be reviewed.

We gotta take care of the Seahags first though.

Sect 227, what is so outrageous to wait until the conclusion of this week's games to pick the highlight game for next week? It makes sense to me. If I was running the NFL I would to the same thing. From the NFL's perspective the Cowboys (with their national fanbase) and the Eagles with the playoffs on the line would probably have just as much "wow" factor as the Jets / Miami - although us Jets fans probably see it differently. The same could be said of the Broncos / Chargers game.

Is anybody that is going to the game really planning on doing anything other than watch football, party, etc. on Sunday no matter what time the game is being played? I'm not local to NY, but if you have to go to the game at 1:00PM I can't imagine many people have anything planned for the evening on Sunday - due to traffic, celebrating :), commiserating :-(, etc. The only downside, of course, is if you have to work early on Monday morning. However, the week between Christmas and New Years is slow anyway.

There are a lot of things not to like about the NFL (too many commercials, PSL's, officiating, etc.). However a possible decision to wait until this week's games to pick next week's signature game is just good business without evil intent. IMHO of course.

Your HO is respected, of course, and thank you for looking at it from the NFL's perspective.

But since you don't go to the games, I'd suggest you also don't have a feel for what it's like to plan for 4 people. Contrary to popular belief, there's a hell of a difference between a 1PM game and a last minute change to a night game, especially if you've got kids going.

I could be wrong, but I submit this flex shit is starting to bother a lot more people than just myself.

Understood, I know late night games are probably a bitch especially with small kids. I remember those days well. However, is there that much of a difference knowing whether the game will be flexed either today or next Monday? Or is the problem just flexing the game in general?

Only if you have kids, that is the ONLY excuse I'll take. Everyone else should macho up, get to the game early, get rowdy, and be loud!!!!

This game could maen the playoffs. I don't care if they played at 4am, I'd sure make it a point to be there. For those of you who do not to go, step aside and let a playoff starved, crazed Jets fan go to the game.

I'm going either way but the game time will determine who and how many people are coming with me.

Thats good news. The Flex will make less and less fans show up to the most important game of the year where we need a loud crowd. I like the odds of the crowd being loud since the only time they were loud was vs. Buffalo. Hmm.

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt that happens. The NFL won't flex another NFC game (especially one with only WC implications) over a game that pits longtime rivals, vying for the AFC East division crown, with the drama of Favre/Pennington. The only way this game doesn't get flexed is if we and the Dolphins lose Sunday and the Pats win.

Id say plan for the night game, and if its earlier great you can always switch things up ...unless you have numerous other things to do on that sunday?

I'm pretty sure that they couldn't flex to that game even if they wanted to. The Cowboys and Eagles will have BOTH used up their allotted number of primetime games for the season. (I think the number is five) If it had only been one of them who had done so, they would be allowed to take this game. (And btw, from a RATINGS point of view, they would take this game if it had playoff implications) But since both teams have used up their maximum number of allowable primetime games, this game isn't an option for Sunday night Footabll in week 17. The only other viable option other than the Jets-Dolphins, would be the Giants-Vikings. However, I personally think the Giants will wrap up homefield this weekend against Carolina, and while the Vikings may or may not need the game (they probably will), I just don't see them taking this game over a game they could essentially entitle "The AFC EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - THE WINNER WINS THE DIVISION AND THE THREE SEED AND THE LOSER GOES HOME). Not only will the Jets-Dolphins game be a divisional championship game but it will be an elimination game as well. Sorry man, I think you're in trouble.
