http://theredzone.org/BlogDescripti...ry-out-rugby-player-Hayden-Smith/Default.aspx The New York Jets tried out Australian rugby player Hayden Smith, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. Smith wasn't immediately signed to a contract, though. A 6-foot-7, 240-pounder originally from Penrith, Austraila who attended Metropolitan State in Denver, Smith began playing rugby in the seventh grade. He was the basketball team captain in college. After college, Smith played rugby for the Denver Barbos and played last season for the Aviva Premiership Champions,Saracens, and was named Aviva Community Player of the Year. More on this beast: http://www.espnscrum.com/scrum/rugby/player/82091.html EDIT: From Rotoworld: Jets worked out TE Hayden Smith. Smith, 6'7/240, is a rugby player originally from Penrith, Australia. He attended Metropolitan State in Denver, where he was also captain of the basketball team. The Jets are looking for tight end depth behind Dustin Keller
At Saracens he plays in the Second row. So he is part of the Scrum who are responsible for pushing and with having a lot of power. With him being a rugby player he should have decent hands as all players are required to be part of the offensive game. So I would say he is most likely to be a TE as you guys have already assumed.
The article also mentions he was a basketball team captain in college. I think it was Gates, (?maybe Finley too) who played bball; seems basketball players can transition well to TE.
Keller, Cumberland, and this guy if he can play? Not bad. If Turner can get some power in his legs to block he could transition too. I'm hoping Keller raises his blocking abilities cause it would be nice to see a long term solution at TE.
Graham over in NO played basketball too. They catch the ball by "boxing out" and providing a huge target.
Couldn't it also mean that Keller is safe and the Jets are looking for someone to come in and block at the TE position without having to spend a draft pick on him or spend more than the minimum through free agency?
