Thomas was doing ok until he fumbled in the MNF game against the Bears. After that his confidence was shot.
agreed, at least Blair Thomas was somewhat productive. He is still a huge bust, but he contributed to the team. Gholston has done one thing in his entire career, and that chasing down Chris Johnson on one play a year ago, that may have been a TD saving (and game saving) tackle. Other than that, he has done nothing. Generated no pressure, no potential pass rush. He has shown no potential anything in his time here. He has what 30 tackles in his career? He has been deactivated for games, and incredibly meaningful ones at that, see the playoffs last year. Rex devised a scheme to help get Gholston a sack against the bills this year stating his top priority in that game is to get the ghost his first career sack. And gholston did not even get close. Vernon is our worst bust ever, and its terrible that it had to happen, but if he had actually been some kind of a player, Mangini may never have been fired, and we wouldnt have Rex and Sanchez. Which is infinitely more important to the franchise and its future than the selection of gholston ever could have been. Time to let go and maybe actually be thankful that Gholston was so god damn bad
No way. Gholston is #1. If Gholston was a RB, he'd take the hand off and run the wrong way...that's assuming he hangs onto the ball
There is no way you can ever top the BUST that Dewayne Robertson was as an OVERALL FOOTBALL DECISION: 1) Terry Bradway admits he needed to "make a splash" after the impression was he was raided by the Skins 2) Bradway spends TWO 1st round picks for a DT in a draft loaded with DT's and loaded with TALENT 3) Robertson was THE Combine workout warrior.. If he was on any 1st round draft board in December of that year I have yet to see it In order to evaluate a bad Draft pick you need to look at the draft and who the team passed on.... With the Gholston pick, that draft was mediocre and every draft pundit had Gholston in the 1st round for an entire year - coming out of his JR year he was rated as one of the best defensive players in the country. Mayock and everyone else said this guy would flourish and rated him for over a year before the draft. You have to be clueless about that draft to say Gholston was the Combine stud over Robertson. How can you rate the Robertson pick and ignore that it was TWO 1st round picks - A LOT more was spent on Robertson than Gholston... I'd say DOUBLE!!! And it was a much better draft..... If we put it in perspective of who we could have had in each draft it's no contest... Dewayne Robertson was just a STUPID STUPID decision by a part time GM "looking to make a splash"... Guy basically admits he makes the pick due to media and fan reation to the Redskins.... REALLY!!!!?????? Guy should have been escorted out of the complex as soon as that pick was made and Bradway made theat comment.... UNBELIEVAB:E that people don't see what Bradway did here and call it the worst move ever in the NFL HANDS DOWN>>> PERIOD!
agreed that D-rob was a horrible decision from a draft mentality, then toss in the fact we didnt even wait until the bears were on the clock to make the move, meaning that he might not have even been there at the time we wanted to draft him. Although I preferred Andre Johnson and hoped that he slipped to us. Then you toss in the fact they supposedly knew about his degenerative knee condition, and that his career may have been 5-6 years in length before his knees gave out, and it is the worst football decision ever. That said as a player D-rob could at least play to the effect of second round selection. We have gotten more out of Jamaal Westerman a UDFA than Gholston and frankly if Vernon was a UDFA (instead of #6 overall pick) I'm not sure he would have made the team his rookie season....
At the time of the draft..... In a LOADED DRAFT..... My direct quote at the time was "Damn, Bradway better be willing to give away his 1st born if he's willing to spend TWO 1st round picks on a DT in a draft full of DT's and just full of talent like this" The Pick was just BAD before DR even stepped foot on the field... For what the Jets spent he needed to be the next coming. Most people didn't even know who Dewayne Robertson was in December of that year and all of a sudden he gets picked FOURTH?????? By a team that TRADES UP and uses TWO 1st round picks REALLLLLLLLLY????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the GM says he was just making a splash.... WAHHHHHHHHHHHH??????? I personally said I didn't want Gholston but, the guy didn't come out of no where - He was a top Defensive player in college for a whole year before the draft.. Dewayne??????????????
Blair Thomas had a 4.2 yard per carry average and scored 7 TDs. Not, by any means, great numbers. But he clearly had a better career that Gholston. Thomas even went on to play for 3 more teams (NE, Dallas, Carolina). Thomas led the team in rushing in 1991 with 728 yards. Brad Baxter was 2nd with 666 yards.
I'd also give the first round and a half of 2005 its own miserable category. Justin Miller, Mike Nugent and a trade for Doug Jolley. What a bold gambit.
Oh yeah,..... Forgot about the freaking KNEE!!!!!!!!! i don't care that he played a little and arguably up to a 2nd round pick - the fact that TWO 1st round picks were used negates that to me and there is no STUPIDER decision I have ever seen...... If you go out and draft a Gholston in a mediocre draft where everyone says he should go, that's 1 thing..... But, when you go out and spend TWO 1st round picks to "make a splash" on a guy no one heard of two months before with bad knees. MY GOD!!!!!!!! You should be tarred and feathered. THE FACT IS.... You might have been able to get Dewayne Roberton in round 2... Again, that draft was known to be LOADED with talent..... the was little chance of getting Gholston in round 2 - His TALENT was too obvious, it's his heart that let us down.
Approaching the draft some guys drink tiger blood. Take on super powers. I remember reading someone posting on this board how, after drafting Mike Nugent, all we needed to do was cross the 50 and we were guaranteed three points. And whenever someone would talk about Dewayne like he was the second coming of Warren Sapp, one poster (maybe KentuckyJet) would mention how he had watch every game the guy ever played in college and didn't understand the allure.
I tend to agree with you. I had no idea who Robertson was until the combine. Bradway fell for the combine hype and gave up a lot to get him. In VG's case, he was rated a s top-ten pick by everyone. Blair Thomas was when he came out too. In both cases, many of us would have been upset had we passed on those guys. I guess it depends on how you define a "bust". Some will base it on what happened after a great college career. In that case, Vernon and Blair top the list. If your definition of bust is based more on a poor Jets management decision, it is hard to argue with DeWayne - or even Johnny Lam for that matter. Both of those guys were rated way too high, based on potential rather than results in college. The Jets lost not only what these players didn't do on the field, but also additional high picks surrendered to get them that could have been other all-pro players. At least we didn't do that for VG as we did for DeWayne. Thankfully we've been able to overcome VG's ineptness. Let's hope we never have to revive this thread. Are you listening Kyle Wilson?
OMG, I STILL can feel the honest to god pure rage I felt inside that year. What a terrible, terrible fucking draft. Doug fucking Jolley. UGH. That said, I think Gholston is # 1. I see the point about what we gave up for D-Rob, which was plenty, but as the blog writer wrote, at least we got SOMETHING out of him at random points in his career. It's not even the lack of sacks, we got absolutely fucking NOTHING from the Ghost. I can't remember (mind you my memory sucks ass so I can be corrected) one huge or difference making play that fuck made in 3 years.
That's funny. But it could be someone just trying to make themselves feel better about such a dumb shit move. My best friend is a Chiefs fan, and I remember he gave me a TON of shit the second that pick was announced and every moment he could thereafter, and I probably said some dumb shit similar to the above highlighted passage. But it was just me trying to defend my team. God, for all the heartbreak, how can someone not love being a Jets fan! Good times!
I don't think it's fair to call Thomas the biggest bust just because he wasn't Emmit Smith. Gholston was flat out useless. We got zero out of him, and he was a waste of a roster spot. Fuck that guy.
I remember being so excited about the DRob trade. THE JETS MADE A SPLASH! I also remember being really excited when they selected Gholston. BEAST! Anybody remember Marvin "Shade Tree" Jones? I was really excited when we took him too. MAN CHILD! Looks like I won't be getting a job in the FO any time soon.
just think the slots the Jets gave up for D-rob ended up being Ty warren and Rex Grossmen. Also of note: Dallas clark, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Larry johnson went after the second pick #1 pick.
Facepalm. What's really sad is that the Jets have a history of this ineptitude. It isn't an isolated event. God, the 90s sucked. Considering the recent hits with DBrick, Mangold, Revis, Harris, Keller, and Sanchez, I am actually OK with missing on Gholston. Our drafting has been really solid in the last 5+ years.
