NEWSDAY BY BOB GLAUBER March 8, 2006 Now that the Jets have restructured Chad Pennington's contract to ensure he'll be with them in 2006, they're on to their next order of business: finding his potential replacement. Pennington's deal will keep him with the team for at least the coming season, but the Jets are considering drafting a quarterback with the fourth overall choice, or with a higher pick, if they trade up. Newsday has learned the Jets are making plans with the top quarterback prospects to work them out privately before next month's draft. Leigh Steinberg, the agent for USC quarterback Matt Leinart, said yesterday the Jets have contacted him to set up a private workout sometime in April. Leinart is scheduled to have his pro day workout at USC on April 2. It's uncertain whether the Jets would stage the workout in California or New York. "They've inquired about a workout," Steinberg said of the Jets. He believes Leinart will be the first quarterback drafted, possibly with the No. 1 overall pick. "I feel as sure about Matt as I was about Ben Roethlisberger," said Steinberg, who also represents the Steelers quarterback. Roethlisberger won the Super Bowl last month in his second pro season. Another person familiar with the Jets' plans said yesterday that the team also has contacted Texas quarterback Vince Young's representatives to set up a private workout. It is also expected that the Jets will work out Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler. The agents for Young and Cutler did not return messages yesterday. Interestingly, the Jets have not contacted USC running back Reggie Bush for a private workout, although it's possible they'll do so at a later date. Bush's agent, Joel Segal, said he had not heard from the Jets. He said he had been in contact with the other teams who have picks in the top five. Texans general manager Charley Casserly, who has the No. 1 overall pick, has suggested he'd be open to a trade. A person familiar with the situation said the Texans would be interested in the Jets' first pick, but Segal said he expects Houston to take Bush. "I think Reggie's the first pick in the draft," Segal said. "If you look at the new coach in Houston [Gary Kubiak], he likes to use the running back extensively in his system." =========== Jets | Team expected to setup workout for Cutler Tue, 7 Mar 2006 20:57:32 -0800 The Star Tribune reports the New York Jets are expected to setup a private workout for Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler. Nice find Jabba... I am suprised to hear the Jets will workout Vince Young...hopefully they are considering him if Cutler and Leinart are gone.
i dont think the jets should draft vince young in first round. We have more important things that a qb at the moment and vince young doesnt seem to be reliable enuf to me. He plays pretty well in college but it would do him alot better if he stayed for senior year. I think the transition into pro would definately test him and im not sure if hes up 2 it.
Relax guys the jets have a intelligent FO now they are working their 4th pick. Smoke and mirrors i tell ya.
This does sound like smoke and mirrors. Maybe we are just trying to generate that great buzz that causes other teams to inquire about our pick.
Generally any team with a top five pick schedules most of the top 10 prospects for a visit, even if they have no intention of drafting them. It keeps their options open. They make teams think they'll go for whoever falls and all of a sudden teams want to trade up...
I think it's very clear that they will go QB, IF they can get either Leinart or Cutler. If not, I think they will try to trade down with someone who wants Ferguson or Young. They would then wait and take either Croyle or Jacobs, or maybe Whitehurst later on.
I agree... it's really looking that way. Penny will be around to mentor the kid and should be very good at doing that. Makes sense all the way around.
Just curious, what exactly is a 'workout'? Do we just turn the press corp loose on some unsuspecting rookie?
What a smoke and mirrors trick bring in everyone except the one you plan on drafting. D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
:rofl2: :rofl2: Now thats funny... so many fans are all over this guys jock. I can't wait till he's still on the board after we pick. Ellis
That would be the worst attempt at a smoke screen...I think the Jets want to see what is there in the top three QB's...I don't think you have to smokescreen too much in the top 5...people have a general idea of who you want...
It is all just homework. I doubt they will trade up. Maybe they are trying to hype the pick a little, to see what kind of deal they might be able to shake loose from another team. But I see them drafting Brick, Cutler, or trading down.
i don't care how stupid he is....I'd still take Young before Cutler. I admit I don't know much about Cutler, but frankly that's what worries me..I mean Vanderbilt....I dunno, I just don't trust that this guy's gonna be a big time NFL QB. who knows.....I guess i'm hoping the whole Cutler thing is the smokecreen
