Fans and media members look at the upset of New England and the Jets' 5-4 record, and at the apparently soft schedule that awaits them after this week's game against Chicago, and one word comes to mind -- playoffs.

However, that's not the kind of thinking that has gotten first-year coach Eric Mangini and his Jets this far, and they have no intention of changing their one-at-a-time approach, which applies to everything they do.

"It's still way too early at this point," left guard Pete Kendall said. "There are seven games left to play. There are a lot of things that are beyond our control at this point. If we needed somebody to grab our attention, we certainly have got it. The Chicago Bears are 8-1 (and) they may very well be the best team in football right now."

One at a time, right, Pete?

"That's been a point of emphasis for Eric," Kendall said, "not just don't look to the playoffs. But Eric's thing is, don't look to the next meeting, don't look to the next day, the next practice or the next play. That's been a steady approach for Eric since he's been here."

When asked Wednesday about the team's goals, Mangini said, "Our goal still is progress. If we can do that, if we can continue to make progress, then success will come. I think there has been some good progress, but there are plenty of things we need to correct from last week. That's the key thing, the fight against human nature, not getting too high or too low, and taking the same approach week-in and week-out.

"We don't even use that 'P-word.' It's progress, use that one as a 'P-word,' and the 'P-word' (Patriots) from last week," Mangini added. "I'm not even going to say" playoffs.

Well, quarterback Chad Pennington did use that word, but he wasn't promising that the Jets will get there. But he did expect to be in this position, despite the doom and gloom predicted for the Jets before the season.

"I'm not surprised," he said. "Our core guys that have been here for three or four years, including myself -- we've experienced success. We've been in the playoff hunt. We know what that's like. And our expectations, no matter what the outside expectations were coming into the season, never changed."

"We all feel like as veterans, we have that experience," the quarterback added. "We need to set the tempo and set the tone for the rest of our team and let these guys know that, hey, this is not a rebuilding year. This is not a year where we're just going to rest on our laurels and try to win a few games. We want to be in the playoff hunt every year."

Wideout Laveranues Coles laughed when asked about the "P-word."

"What, the penguin word?" said Coles, who has given the stocky Mangini the nickname "The Penguin."

Coles continued, "If talking about the penguin is going to get me in trouble then I won't talk about it, but that's the only 'P-word' I know about right now."
"Eric is probably the smartest coach I've ever been around," receiver Laveranues Coles said of coach Mangini.
SERIES HISTORY: 9th meeting. Bears lead series, 5-3. In the last meeting, the Jets lost 20-13 to the Bears at the University of Illinois on Dec. 15, 2002, a loss which at the time seemed to doom the Jets' playoff hopes. (Soldier Field was being refurbished that year and was unavailable.) But the Jets won their final two games, got plenty of help, and captured the AFC East title with a 9-7 record.
