http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2008/06/jets_pick_up_another_tight_end.html Jets pick up another tight end by Dave Hutchinson/Star-Ledger staff Thursday June 19, 2008, 11:25 PM In a move that could signal the Jets' intentions to trade unhappy tight end Chris Baker, the club yesterday signed tight end A.J. Schable, a special teams player who would be used primarily as a blocker. The Jets already have veteran Bubba Franks, rookie Dustin Keller and third-year pro Jason Pociask, who had a strong minicamp, at the position. During minicamp, Baker, who wants a new contract, angered the organization by parking his red Bentley in the "Team President" parking spot and refused to move it. Baker was fined $3,000 for missing a treatment session on his back. He tweaked his back while warming up for his second practice and spent the remainder of camp on the exercise bike. Schable (6-4, 273 pounds) signed with Arizona in 2006 as a rookie free agent and played defensive end and fullback. He had 12 special teams tackles. He was waived in training camp and sat out last season. The Eagles signed and waived him this offseason. The Jets released offensive lineman Shawn McMackin (Hofstra/River Vale, N.J.). =========== I just want to know why they didn't have it towed?
Parking your Bentley in the team president's parking spot is not exactly the most intelligent way to show that you need more money.
This couldn't be handled any worse by Baker. He has no support on his side. Sad to see such a good guy make the wrong moves and have everyone hate him.
I googled his name to check on some more news and got 'Chris Baker, The Problem Maker'. Heh, that's pretty good.
I don't think anyone would see anything wrong with the room switch this time. After this stunt, every organization would probably do the same thing. Get him out of here. NOW.
Just cut his ass already. We don't need him on the field and we don't need this crap happening off of it.
Who would give up a pick for a average TE, that wants to get paid? I think the Bentley thing was funny, good Job, Chris.
Michael Lombardi of Sport Illustrated Offers a Chris Baker Solution A pick and Baker for Shockey. He can groom Keller to be as good as him, but the Jets must teach Keller to block at least half of the time. This is Lombardi's idea: • If I were with the New York Jets, I might call Jerry Reese, the Giants general manager, and discuss trading my unhappy tight end Chris Baker for his unhappy tight end Jeremy Shockey. Baker is a better blocker then Shockey and Shockey is the better receiver. Both are unhappy for different reasons and both need a change of scenery -- badly. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/michael_lombardi/06/23/frankly.football/1.html Thoughts????
I don?t think Shockey would be really happy here, giving Goallinelooks to Franks and staying in to help Woody block.
I'd rather have it the other way around. Shockey is younger and can still move. They are almost the size size, and Franks is the better blocker. The nice thing about it is that even with Franks doing most of the blocking, he can also go out on routes and be effective. Defenses wouldn't like this look. 3 TE sets with the addition of Keller from 25 yrds out on a 2nd and 5 can really piss a defense off. Schotty could have a field day with the imaginative schemes with those 3. Salary cap is the problem though.
I would be thrilled wit that, i haev always liked Shockey, good hands, can block and can make things happen. We would have a great set up at the end to block or receive, that would frighten the hell out of teams. One thing is for sure though, Baker needs to go and go fast.
Baker has punched his ticket out of here. We might get a fifth rounder for him, that could adjust to a fourth. I think that is the best we are going to do.
What a royal douchebag...he needs to be taught a lesson. The FO needs to send a message that complaining and carrying on like a 5-year old is not the way to get the team to bend to your will. He wants $$ or trade. I say we give him neither. Keep him until final roster cuts, then put him on the PS.
