Jets signed CB Hank Poteat to a one-year, $635,000 contract. Poteat is picked up during the season every year by the Pats or Jets, so Eric Mangini is getting the move out of the way early. He started some games in 2006, but New York will hope he's a reserve next season. Whether or not he stays on the team is to be determined. I personally like him as a nickel back not a starter. He's a solid veteran who makes few mistakes.
Source: Poteat Re-Signs This isn’t going to knock the Jeter/A-Rod soap opera off the back page, but the Jets have re-signed starting CB Hank Poteat, according to an NFL source. It’s not Asante Samuel or Nate Clements, but at least they retained a cornerback who knows the system and coach Eric Mangini. Poteat didn’t break the bank, receiving a one-year, $635,000 contract that includes $40,000 in bonus money. Obviously, this is small potatoes compared to some of the crazy money that will be thrown around in nine days, when the free-agent market opens. Poteat was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent. He experienced an eventful 2006, having been released by the Patriots and Jets before re-signing with the Jets in October. Eventually, he emerged as the starter at right corner, a position that became a virtual merry-go-round for the Jets. He was the fourth player to start at that spot, following David Barrett, Justin Miller and Drew Coleman. Hammering Hank (only kidding) started seven games, including the wild-card playoff game in New England. After having been cut seven times in his career, give or take a cut or two, Poteat opted for some stability. He’s comfortable with Mangini, having played under him in New England. This modest contract, of course, doesn’t guarantee Poteat a spot on the roster. The Jets have six corners under contract (Andre Dyson and Alphonso Hodge are the others), and they’re expected to seek further upgrades. http://blogs.nydailynews.com/jets/archives/2007/02/source_poteat_resigns.php
bargain for an experienced guy like that...let's hope he doesn't have to start and we can use him only as a nickel or dime back
the only other FA I would like to sign back is Clement. But some reatarded team will give him 3-4 mil a yr, 4-5 year deal. watch this junk happen, with all the money teams have Askew can go as far as I am concerned the other fullback, Hodgkins is a dime in a dozen he can go all the others are just role guys if they sign for minimum with SB's of 30k and less then they can come back the only thing I think we need to do between now and FA is the proper cuts McCariens, Barrett, Barlow, Blalock?, Ramsey?, and try to extend Cotch
I definitely don't think he should be over Justin Miller in the depth chart, and I'd like to see Drew Coleman surpass him too.
Why? He clearly played much better than both of those guys and brings good experience to the secondary. Although I do hope Justin Miller and or Drew Coleman are ABLE to overtake him.
obviously i dont think anyone wants to see him starting, but he looked solid stepping in and proving that almost any guy off the street could play corner better than we were...i think he definently elevated the competition at corner and gave barrett/miller a reality check i hope we add a rookie and/or vet to continue to raise the competition at corner
i like the signing and like the idea of barrett being cut--he makes too much and gives way too much cushion
good depth sign for the way he played for us last season...id be happy to see him in the nickle or dime package...and for the price we got him for...EXCELLENT!
Good for Hank. Hopefully he has found some stability with the Jets as both a reserve and special-teamer...Love to see guys like that make the team, so it looks...
Why not...I mean he actually started almost half the year, and while not spectacular, didn't suck...we scored on this one...consider that derrick backuplock made 2 mil per, and its a steal.
I'm glad we signed him. He was really steady for us and very much by the book in his style of play. He's a very good tackler which is an emphasis in the Mangini defensive system both here and New England. And for that salary and SB, it's all the more woth it. Depth is really important at the CB position. Once that's stabalized, working on improving the front 7 is going to be the focus of the draft, and to an extent in Free Agency as well.
