Anytime you can bring a guy on board that was cut in week 15 for missing field goals on a playoff bound team, you do it. On the other hand, Folk part 2?
I bet neither Ficken nor Maher are even the opening day kicker unless they look radically better. I think we should just pay for a decent kicker and not play musical chairs and praying one sticks.
Might as well bring in every kicker we can... have a kickathon. Kicking was one of our hiles this year for sure. Also and o line... edge rusher, corner, wr.... at this point we don't have enough roster spots in the preseason.
It's a good move. We have to look at all possible options in terms of shoring up the kicking situations. Shows me Douglas is going to be out there and aggressive in improving this team. Maher could become like a Folk for us...or maybe he's nothing. But we really don't want to go into next season with Ficken again.
The Jets should have an open kickers competition at this time of year and in the stadium - lets see who can really kick in wet and windy conditions.
A lot to pay for him though, this season was a step backwards, 23/28 82.1% 5 misses from over 40 yards, 40/44 EP's
Good signing. Why not? Ficken shouldn't be our kicker next year. No idea what happened to Maher mid season but I know he sure as hell wouldn't miss a kick short from 50 like Ficken did.
For some reason the Jets seem to have undervalued kickers in the last few years. Maybe they were spoiled and thought they could just pick one off the vine - sort of like OL I guess. But I hope they understand the value now. It's demoralizing for the team to drive into potential scoring territory, and then come away with nothing, and usually putting the other team in good field position. Deciding to not go for it on 4th down and then missing the FG is doubly deflating: you show no faith in your offense to convert and then you don't even get the points. I like the idea of a kicking competition held at the stadium. Maybe a couple of completely open ones with fans invited in maybe, and then a "kick off" to narrow the field down to a couple who would be invited to T.C. It would be good publicity, and maybe uncover a hidden gem.
